SAN FRANCISCO — Golden State Warriors GM Mike Dunleavy said talks about bringing back veteran stalwart Draymond Green and Kristaps Porzingis are ongoing, but sounded optimistic about how the conversations are going heading into free agency next month.

“I’ve had conversations with kind of all of our free agents,” Dunleavy said during a Wednesday news conference. “Their representatives. I think we’re in a good place with all of them … as far as Draymond and KP, Draymond has the player option, but we’re in communication with his group. Then same thing with KP. Both guys, I think, we value, we want here, and we see them as a kind of (a) piece of the puzzle next season.”

Green, 36, has to decide whether or not to pick up a player option worth almost $28 million for next season. He has said repeatedly throughout the year that he is hoping to return to the Warriors next year, but Dunleavy has been clear that the ball remains in Green’s court. If Green were to decline the option and work out an extension at a lower number, the feeling throughout the league is that he will have a better chance to stay with the Warriors — especially if that lower salary next season helps the Warriors stay out of the luxury tax.

When Will Steph Curry retire?

Green, as well as veterans Al Horford (who has a player option worth $6 million) and De’Anthony Melton (who has a player option worth close to $3.5 million), have until June 29th to make their decisions, according to SportTrac. Porzingis, who will be 31 in August, was acquired from the Atlanta Hawks just before February’s trade deadline. He is an unrestricted free agent. He made almost $31 million last year, and it remains unclear exactly what the rest of his market will be this summer across the league.

As Dunleavy waits to set up the rest of his roster, what’s clear is that he seems confident in making the 11th pick and not moving it as part of another, larger deal. While he noted several times Wednesday that “everything’s on the table,” he was clear in his desire that the Warriors get younger this summer in their moves, not older.

“It’s a sliding scale,” Dunleavy said. “We’re okay with it if we’re going to get older. Frankly, it’s not the best thing, but if it’s going to make us better, like significantly better, I think we have to look at that, because that’s really our thought process and (the) job right now is to make this team better. So if it means doing older, then we’ll do it, but that’s pretty unlikely. There’s only so many guys I feel like we could bring in that are older. We’ve got some guys on the back end of it already, and to add to that, there would definitely be some risk. Maybe there’s a situation we do that and go for it — we obviously would prefer to get younger.”

Dunleavy acknowledged, while answering a question about what, if anything, he would use from watching the finals in his draft evaluation process, that the league itself is more “wide open” than ever before.

“I think you’ve got to be careful about overreacting, but the playoffs are the ultimate test,” Dunleavy said. “It’s a good place to see and view kind of where the league is at, where it’s going. We’ve had, what, eight different champions in eight years. Is that right? I’d say the big-picture thing is it’s as wide open as it’s ever been. We can’t make any assumptions that this team is going to do it for the next 10 years. They’re going to be here. You know, injuries, salary cap issues, all those things. I think we’ve got to be careful of that.

“More than anything, it teaches you just to focus in on yourself and what you can do to be better. Don’t worry about we have to beat this team or we’ve got to be better than this at this position. I think it just reinforces we need to be better and let’s focus on ourselves.”

Dunleavy also noted that there is no update to the Warriors’ assistant coaching search for the time being. Former assistants Terry Stotts and Jerry Stackhouse left the organization earlier this summer in hopes of landing head coaching jobs somewhere else.

“We’re still working through that,” Dunleavy said. “Obviously, getting the main thing done with Steve was huge. With Terry and Jerry leaving, there obviously will be some changes, so we’re working through that. But nothing imminent. Once there is, we’ll let you guys know.”
