The upcoming animated comedy Minions & Monsters is finally on the right track with a favorable box office forecast. Directed and co-written by Pierre Coffin, the Illumination production has received low predictions for its domestic start since the beginning of June compared to the box office performance of other Minions and Despicable Me films. Fortunately, it looks like the movie is making a steady comeback amid a highly competitive field in late June and early July. The film is a prequel of sorts as it follows the yellow, spritely creatures as they attempt to create a blockbuster monster movie in the 1920s by summoning demonic entities from what looks like an ancient spellbook. Featuring a solid voice cast that includes Trey Parker, Allison Janney, Jeff Bridges, and a surprise cameo of George Lucas, Minions & Monsters arrives on Wednesday, July 1, in the United States.
What is Minions & Monsters expected to earn in its domestic opener?
The Illumination sequel Minions & Monsters is predicted to earn $75 million to $85 million over its 3-day domestic opening start from July 3 to July 5 over the Independence Day holiday weekend. For its 5-day domestic debut from July 1 to July 5, it’s expected to bring in $95 million to $115 million.
These new numbers for the Universal Pictures production come from BoxOffice Pro, which notes that past films in the franchise like 2022’s Minions: The Rise of Gru and 2017’s Despicable Me also took advantage of the July 4 celebrations. This new predicted range falls in the middle between the domestic starts of Despicable Me 3’s $72.4 million and Minions: The Rise of Gru’s $107 million. While its debut may be eclipsed by its most direct competitor, Toy Story 5, which has already banked $312 million worldwide ($160 million domestic, $152 international) in its domestic start, this projection for Minions & Monsters is still tracking higher than GOAT’s $27 million and Hopper’s $45 million.
This higher range is notably stronger than the $53 million to $62 million prediction from BoxOfficeTheory that comes from its June 1 forecast (and its June 19 report has not altered these figures). The site believes that the movie will bring in somewhere between $225 million and $280 million over its entire domestic run.
In addition to Toy Story 5, Minions & Monsters has more than several competitors that it will need to face as it seeks to remain at the top of the box office charts. The film is coming less than a week after the DCU blockbuster Supergirl, which has a similar box office prediction as Minions & Monsters, and arrives on the same weekend as the patriotic offering Young Washington that will be boosted by the Independence Day holiday. Then a week after, Disney’s live-action Moana comes out on June 10 and has a strong predicted range of $75 million to $96 million for its domestic start. And then Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey arrives on US shores on June 17 and has an even more impressive predicted range of $97 million to $132 million in its domestic debut.
The good news is that this Minions sequel is already looking like a box office success regardless of the competition. According to Puck, the budget for the film is only $85 million, which is notably lower than the $110 million cost for Illumination’s The Super Mario Galaxy Movie. This means that Minions & Monsters will only need to go past the $275 million mark to be profitable, if we follow the general rule than films need to bring in 2.5 times its production budget. That’s a goal the movie is expected to reach merely on its current domestic predictions. That said, Illumination and Universal Pictures likely have higher expectations for the movie given the $940 million worldwide haul of Minions: The Rise of Gru.
