Rob Lowe recently revealed that a St. Elmo’s Fire sequel script is actively in development, Deadline reported. The six-time Golden Globe nominee confirmed the team is “working on” the screenplay. Lowe expressed enthusiasm about the progress on the long-awaited follow-up.
“I’m trying to get it done, but I’m excited,” he said on The Kelly Clarkson Show. He also explained the film’s lasting appeal to audiences across generations. “I think the reason that St. Elmo’s continues to mean a lot to people is because it’s such a great snapshot of your 20s.”
Lowe further confirmed that the entire original cast shares his enthusiasm for the project. “Everyone wants to do it. We just need to get the script right, and that’s what we’re working on,” he added. The team is prioritizing quality over speed with the screenplay.
This update builds on comments Lowe made in 2024 to Entertainment Tonight. At that time, he described the sequel as being in “very early stages” after meeting with the studio. He also noted that Andrew McCarthy’s documentary Brats “only added to the excitement around” a potential follow-up.
The original 1985 Joel Schumacher film starred Lowe, Demi Moore, Andrew McCarthy and Emilio Estevez. Ally Sheedy, Mare Winningham, Judd Nelson and Andie MacDowell also appeared in the beloved drama. It followed a group of recent college graduates struggling with the transition into adulthood.
NBC previously attempted to develop a St. Elmo’s Fire television series in 2019. That modernized take on the original story, however, never materialized. The original cast reunited for McCarthy’s 2024 documentary Brats, which revisited the Brat Pack cultural phenomenon.
