Jurgen Klinsmann says Germany are in a “huge hole” following their “embarrassing” World Cup exit at the hands of Paraguay.
The four-time winners crashed out last night after losing their first-ever penalty shoot out at a World Cup with Kai Havertz, Nick Woltemade and Jonathan Tah all missing from the spot after the game finished 1-1 after 120 minutes.
Germany dominated the entire game against a side that showed no attacking intent whatsoever but Julian Nagelsmann’s men lacked the craft to break them down until Havertz headed in to cancel out Julio Enciso’sopener.
Die Mannschaft have now failed to reach the round of 16 at a World Cup since 2014, when they won the tournament in Brazil.
“Obviously it’s a very sad day for all of us in Germany, because we didn’t expect going out in the round of 32,” he told ESPN. “And the way we went out is hugely, hugely disappointing.
“It seemed like the team was not prepared to take control of matters during the 120 minutes. They were not energetic enough, decisive enough, aggressive enough to win this battle with a very strong Paraguayan team, which we knew it’s going to be a difficult game.”
Germany usually loves penalties – Klinsmann
Germany never led in a shoot-out they would eventually lose 4-3.
“At the very end it looked like they were not prepared for a penalty shoot-out, which for is for us insane, because we love penalty shoot-outs, usually,” Klinsmann said.
“The way we went out is devastating, is an embarrassment, is something that nobody, nobody expected.
“It’s pretty much as horrible as the exits were in Qatar four years ago, and in Russia eight years ago. So this takes Germany into a huge, huge hole.”
Nagelsmann said he won’t resign but admitted he would change his stance if he got any indication from the German Football Association (DFB) that they felt he was not the right man to lead them towards the European Championship in two years’ time.
“I want to continue. I’m ready,” Nagelsmann said. “If the DFB want that, I’m very happy to prepare for the European Championship and the Nations League. If they don’t want it, then they have to tell me.”
There is a clamour for Jurgen Klopp to take the reins but the former Liverpool boss, who works as the global head of soccer for Red Bull, has so far been reticent to put his name forward.
