This World Cup is going to be hot and at times stormy,with a sizeable chunk of its 104 games set to be played above 90F (32C).
Spread across the United States, Canada and Mexico, it is likely to be thewarmest edition since the previous World Cup in North America, when the U.S. hosted it solo in 1994.
While extreme heat and humidity will affect how matches are played, thunderstorms could provide the greater logistical challenge.
Under the thunderstorm protocol in place, a match must be suspended if lightning or electrical discharge is detected within an eight-mile radius of the stadium involved.
Once that happens, a 30-minute countdown begins, but resets if another strike is detected before it ends.On June 22, the game between France and Iraq became the first World Cup game delayed by the storms, stopping for more than two hours.

Brazil vs Norway
MetLife Stadium, New York/New Jersey. Kick-off: 4 pm local time
A flood watch goes into effect at 12pm ET today and continues through Tuesday morning. A flood watch means that flooding caused by excessive rainfall is possible. Clouds will thicken up this afternoon, and the threat of showers and thundershowers will increase later today. At 4 pm, the match will start with a temperature of 84F (29C). The chance of rain at 4pm is 30%. As the game progresses, the threat of storms will increase. At 6pm, the temperature will be 81F (27C) and the thunderstorm chance increases to 60%. Winds will be out of the southeast at 5 to 15 miles per hour. This match will be monitored for possible lightning delays. The best chance for storms will be toward the end of the match.
Mexico vs England
Estadion Azteca, Mexico City. Kick-off: 6 pm local time
The temperatures will not be an issue in Mexico City today, but storms could certainly impact the start of the game. At 6 pm, the temperature will be 66F (19C), with a 70% chance for a shower or thundershower, and winds will be out of the northeast at 5 to 10 miles per hour.
The storm chance will diminish in the second half. Temperatures will drop to 63F (17C) during the match, and the sun will set at 7:16 pm. We will monitor this game as well for any lightning delays. The best chance for storms will be at the beginning of the match.
