Kawhi Leonard‘s return to the Raptors won’t become official until later today, but he’s already making preparations for his next contract. Sources tell ESPN’s Shams Charania that Leonard has hired Harrison Gaines of SLASH Sports to handle extension negotiations, which are expected to start in the next few days. Charania notes that Gaines has served as Leonard’s business attorney during the past year.
Leonard will be eligible for up to $123.7MM over two years, Charania adds, citing ESPN’s Bobby Marks. With more than 10 years of NBA experience, Leonard can earn up to 35% of the salary cap.
Charania notes that hiring a new agent represents a significant change for Leonard, who was previously represented by Mitch Frankel, along with Leonard’s uncle and business advisor, Dennis Robertson. Frankel handled the lead role in all of Leonard’s dealings with the Clippers, including a three-year extension in 2024.
At age 35, this could be the last major NBA deal for Leonard, who still has one year remaining on his current contract at $50.3MM. Toronto’s reported willingness to give him an extension fueled his desire to return to the city after seven years away. Last Tuesday, the Clippers agreed to send him to the Raptors in exchange for Brandon Ingram, Gradey Dick, unprotected first-round picks in 2031 and 2033, a 2027 first-round pick swap and two second-round selections.
Leonard’s stated desire to play for the Raptors again had a huge effect on his trade market. Sources tell Charania that L.A. talked to several interested teams prior to the draft, but his refusal to commit to a long-term deal with anyone other than Toronto prompted suitors such as the Timberwolves and Pistons to drop out.
In addition to the extension, Charania hears that Leonard’s desire to play for the Raptors again was motivated by his familiarity with the organization, his affection for Toronto and his belief that the team can be a legitimate Eastern Conference contender. Sources tell Charania that Leonard now expects to end his NBA career with the Raptors.
