The Sacramento Kings are waiving six-time NBA All-Star DeMar DeRozan, ESPN’s Shams Charania reported Monday, bringing his two-year tenure with the team to a close.
The move comes after the team tried to trade the veteran during the offseason.

That deal never came together, possibly due to DeRozan’s near $26 million cap hit. But with that no longer a concern, DeRozan is expected to receive a fair amount of buzz on the market.
Despite his age, the 36-year-old averaged 18.4 points and 4.1 assists with the Kings last year. It was DeRozan’s lowest scoring output since the 2013-14 NBA season, the first year he made the All-Star team.
While his numbers were down, DeRozan still proved capable of being a playmaker and scorer. His field-goal percentage actually increased to .497, his highest figure since 2022-23.
Even if teams fear decline, it doesn’t sound like it will take much to bring in DeRozan. The veteran will reportedly consider signing for the veteran’s minimum if it means he’ll get to play for a title contender, per reports. If true, DeRozan should have a fairly robust market.
Over his 17-year career, DeRozan has reached the playoffs seven times, though only one of those appearances came in the past seven seasons. He helped lead the 2021-22 Chicago Bulls to the postseason, where the team lost in five games to the Milwaukee Bucks.
While DeRozan should be a boost to most contenders, he might not be a fit everywhere. DeRozan is a unique player who is a strong shooter and playmaker, but rarely attempts 3s. Some contenders could balk at his style of play.
At the same time, getting a guy who just averaged over 18 points on a minimum deal might render any concerns moot. DeRozan can still put up points and that’s going to be useful to any team. Whether he can win a title before he calls it a career will depend on where he chooses to go and how well he can continue being a scorer in a potentially limited role.
