Jordan Henderson has rejoined the England squad at their World Cup training base in Kansas City after undergoing successful surgery on his broken left arm.

The Brentford midfielder will play no further part in the tournament, but will stay in the United States to support his team-mates as they prepare for Saturday’s quarter-final against Norway in Miami.

Henderson was hurt when he landed awkwardly as he climbed over the advertising hoardings during the celebrations after England’s 3-2 win over Mexico in the round of 16 at the Azteca Stadium on Sunday.

After leaving the field on a stretcher and receiving oxygen, the former Liverpool captain was taken to hospital in Mexico City and didn’t travel back to Kansas City with the rest of Thomas Tuchel’s squad.

He only returned after scans revealed that an operation was required and the surgery was carried out at Kansas City Orthopaedic Institute on Wednesday.

“Surgery done! Let’s get ready for the big one Saturday,” Henderson posted on Instagram with a photo of him with surgeons Kenneth Unruh, Mark Winston and Kirk McCullough.

“Thank-you to all the staff that looked after me. Especially the three surgeons who carried out the operation.”

Henderson earned his 90th cap for England when he came off the bench in the closing stages against Panama in the group stage — his only appearance of this World Cup.

Tuchel has spoken glowingly about the importance of Henderson in terms of the dynamic of his squad as the England head coach regards him as one of the squad’s key leaders.
