The Paraguayan Senate on Wednesday condemned “the discriminatory and racist expressions” of senator Celeste Amarilla against Kylian Mbappe.
The 61-year-old lawyer had called the France striker a “colonized Cameroonian” following the World Cup last-16 match between the two nations on Saturday.
She had previously criticized Mbappe on social media, quoting a post of the striker celebrating in front of Paraguay goalkeeper Orlando Gill: “That brute never even learned to write. Instead of breast milk, he sucked on coconuts, and the most educated creatures he ever listened to were chimpanzees.”
On Wednesday, Paraguay’s Senate deliberated for five hours on the motion, which is passed by majority vote, in which it expressed its “absolute rejection” of all forms of racism and discrimination and stressed that Amarilla’s statements do not represent the position of the chamber.

As detailed by the EFE press agency , Amarilla, who was present at the vote, described Mbappe a “son of a b****” for refusing to shake the hand of Paraguay goalkeeper Gil at the end of the game.
The same report details how Amarilla received support from some of her fellow senators. Yolanda Paredes accused Mbappe of being “racist and xenophobic” against the Paraguay players. Lider Amarilla, another senator, said his colleague’s comments on Mbappe were “naturally expressed disagreement” after being “offended” by Mbappe’s alleged actions.
However, the Senate’s leader Basilio Nunez was critical of Amarilla’s statements and recommended that she become “the master of her silence.”

He added: “For me, the senator’s posts aren’t just bad, they’re terrible and they don’t represent what most Paraguayans think. We must show racism the red card.”
Paraguay’s government said on Mondaythat the remarks from Amarilla, who is a member of the Authentic Radical Liberal Party, were “contrary to the values and principles that inspire peaceful coexistence and respect for human dignity that our country promotes.”
The government added that Amarilla was not representative of their view or that of its people and that it remained committed to “combating racism, xenophobia, intolerance, and all forms of hatred or discrimination.”
Mbappe said Amarilla’s remarks were “despicable” and “racist.”
FIFA president Gianni Infantino “unequivocally” condemned Amarilla’s comments in a post on Instagram. “All of football and society stand in solidarity with the France captain — we need to fight racism and defeat it all together,” he said.
Mbappe’s club team, Real Madrid, also expressed its “strongest condemnation of the deplorable racist and xenophobic remarks” in a statement on Tuesday.
The French Football Federation said on Monday it has reported Amarilla’s comments to the public prosecutor’s office “with a view to legal proceedings.” The Athletic has sought to clarify where such proceedings would take place.
Amarilla has served in the Honorable Senate of the Republic of Paraguay since 2023 and has worked in politics in the South American nation since 1982.
Mbappe is France’s all-time top scorer and leads the way for the World Cup Golden Boot with seven goals in four matches, tied with Lionel Messi and Erling Haaland.
The Athletichas contacted Amarilla’s office for comment on the statements from Mbappe and the FFF.
Mbappe scored the only goal of the last-16 tie from the penalty spot as France defeated Paraguay to set-up a quarter-final against Morocco in Foxborough on Thursday.
