Newcastle United have reached an agreement in principle to sign Johan Manzambi from Freiburg.
The Athleticreported on Tuesday that Newcastle were set to open talks with Freiburg to accelerate their pursuit of the 20-year-old midfielder, who is keen on a move to St James’ Park.
The two clubs have now reached an agreement on deal worth in the region of £50million for the Switzerland international.
Manzambi has risen to wider prominence after recording three goals and two assists in four appearances for his nation at this summer’s World Cup.
He was already being tracked by leading clubs and The Athletic previously reported that Newcastle were in the strongest position to close a deal.
Newcastle have already seen midfielder Sandro Tonali depart for Tottenham Hotspur this summer in a deal worth £100m. There is also interest from Arsenal in Tonali’s central midfield partner last season, Bruno Guimaraes, though Newcastle have strongly insisted he is not for sale.
Manzambi scored twice in a 19-minute substitute cameo for Switzerland in their 4-1 group-stage win against Bosnia and Herzegovina. He scored again after starting the final group match against co-hosts Canada in a 2-1 win.
He came through the academy of Swiss club Servette before joining the youth ranks of German club Freiburg, where he went on to make 58 appearances for the first team, scoring eight goals and assisting 11. He made 47 appearances 2025-26 campaign, recording seven goals and nine assists as Freiburg finished seventh in the Bundesliga, and played a prominent role in their run to the Europa League final.
Manzambi signing would be a coup for Newcastle
Analysis by Newcastle correspondent Chris Waugh
Manzambi is Newcastle’s priority target and is a player they have admired for a long while. He has not only caught their eye at the World Cup, but over the past year or so because of his direct, ball-carrying and game-defining interventions for Freiburg, too.
With Joe Willock likely to leave as he has entered the final 12 months of his contract, Manzambi is the ideal No 8 to replace, and hopefully even upgrade, on the former Arsenal youngster.
The sales of Sandro Tonali and Anthony Gordon would be tempered significantly if a player of the calibre of Manzambi can be signed. He has drawn huge excitement with his performances at the World Cup and still has massive room for growth.
He looks ideally suited for the Premier League and Eddie Howe will be keen for Newcastle to pull this coup off, given Manzambi has plenty of potential suitors.
