England assistant coach Anthony Barry has urged his team to “take the handbrake off and go all-in” ahead of Saturday’s World Cup quarter-final with Norway.
Barry, whose candid half-time interviews have become a feature of this World Cup campaign, also denied that his interviews were ever intended to become popular, and said that he just trying to answer “as directly and as quickly” as he can.
Speaking to talkSPORT before England fly to Miami, Barry said that the final stage of the competition could bring out the best from England, who have progressed well so far without hitting their top level of attacking football.
“We see some training sessions that are just on an absolute incredible level,” Barry said. “We believe that the petrol tank is full, the foot is on the gas, and now maybe we just need to take the handbrake off. Sometimes that can happen with the opponents that we’re facing, sometimes maybe that will happen when they really see the light at the end of the tunnel.”
England will face Norway in Miami on Saturday evening, and if they win that they will play in the second semi-final in Atlanta on Wednesday evening against either Argentina or Switzerland. And Barry is confident that the high stakes and quality opposition will be good for England’s performance level.
“There’s only 11 days left and now is the time to take the handbrake off and go all in,” Barry said. “We think that the public and everyone has seen so many good faces of this team, but we still believe there’s some left to show. And if they click, if they become coherent and be able to find a cohesive performance that we think they’re capable of, then it could be pretty exciting to watch.”

Barry has given half-time TV interviews during every game so far, famously describing the first half performance against Croatia — which was 2-2 at the break — as “complicated and confusing”. But Barry denied that he ever wanted them to become popular, and said that he and Thomas Tuchel had decided between themselves that he would do them.
“They’ve become popular,” Barry said. “That certainly wasn’t and isn’t the intent.” When asked whether they were ‘brutally honest’, Barry pushed back against the first part of that description. “I’d prefer not to use the word brutal, but just to use the word honest,” he said. “And I think it’s a bit of a shame if you’re getting praised for honesty overall. You get asked one question, you answer it as directly and as quickly as you can because overall you just want to be back with the team.”
