One police officer was injured and four people were arrested following disorder in London’s Edgware Road after Morocco’s World Cup elimination to France.
London’s Metropolitan Police force said an officer was hospitalised with head injuries after he was believed to have been hit with a glass bottle.
The disturbances began when a crowd blocked traffic and set off fireworks after the World Cup quarter-final match, which France won 2-0 thanks to goals from Kylian Mbappe and Ousmane Dembele.
Footage shared on social media showed unrest in the area with police in riot gear seen forming a line across the road in a bid to restore order.
Video footage showed a police officer lying on the ground, blocked by two riot vans, while being treated by paramedics.
In a statement, a Met spokesperson said officers were called to the street in north-west London following reports of disturbances which then escalated.
“One officer has been injured, and four people have been arrested following disorder in Edgware Road,” a police spokesperson said.
“Officers were initially called after a group of people congregated in the road and blocked traffic. The incident then escalated with the group throwing bottles and setting off fireworks. As a result, further officers were deployed to the area.
“One officer was taken to hospital for head injuries, it is believed he had been hit by a glass bottle. No other injuries were reported.
“Officers remained in the area and made four arrests for violent disorder, with the group dispersing, and the road re-opened from around 1am.”
The spokesperson added: “We will not tolerate such disorder on our streets, or attacks on our officers. A police presence will remain in the area overnight and we will be reviewing CCTV and video footage circulating on social media to ensure all those responsible are brought to justice.”
Edgware Road, between the Paddington and Marylebone areas of central London, is known for its Middle Eastern restaurants and Arab community and is often a congregation spot for fans of Morocco following matches.
