When this Canadian man discovered how much his colleague paid to charge her Tesla over the course of a year, he was left shocked.

He took to X to share his thoughts, inviting in a whole host of attention.

Many wanted to flex their own savings, while others saw it as an opportunity to take some shots at EVs.

At any rate, it got people talking.

When it comes to buying a car, saving money is a top priority

Unless you’ve mountains of cash to burn through, you’re not likely to invest in a car if you know it’ll cost you more in the long run.

That’s why it’s so important to know what you’re getting yourself into.

It’s no wonder then that the internet is awash with people sharing their own stories about savings on EVs.

In amongst the ongoing EV-Gas debate, plenty of EV owners are raising their heads above the parapet to speak out.

Electroheads

One man who used to laugh at EVs was left floored by the savings he’d made after switching to a Tesla Model Y.

It was a similar story for this man who racked up 238,000 miles on his Model 3.

Admittedly, not everyone counts themselves among the converted, as was the case with this Porsche Taycan owner.

But more and more people are clocking on to how much money can be saved by switching to an EV.

This Canadian man had his eyes opened by his colleague and her Tesla

On X, a Canadian user called ‘tax daddy’ had been gaining traction for his tweet about his colleague.

“My colleague just showed me the charge stats on her Tesla, and I’m seeing that she spent just $524 on charging over a 12-month period,” he wrote.

“Five hundred and twenty-four Canadian dollars, bruh.”

That’s the equivalent of $369 in the US, for what it’s worth.

Nearly four million people have viewed the post in the two days since it was posted, so that’s naturally bought a lot of EV drivers out of the woodworks.

“That’s what we’re enjoying bro,” one EV owner replied.

“Gas savings is one aspect, little to no maintenance is another. Almost 4 years of ownership and only $639 in maintenance cost.”

“That’s my monthly spend on gas…my Tesla can’t come soon enough,” another lamented.

But this is the internet, so there was bound to be some discourse.

Along came the EV skeptics

Some people were quick to raise a counterargument to all the EV praise that was taking place in the replies.

“Almost makes up for the depreciation,” one wrote.

“All that savings will be offset when they go to sell it. Bruh,” another remarked.

What these people are making reference to is the often controversial point about EVs depreciating in value faster than gas cars.

One Chinese EV was branded the ‘fastest depreciating car’ after it lost 75 percent of its value within three years.

But perhaps no one has suffered more at the hands of depreciation than the MacMaster, the aforementioned Porsche Taycan owner.

Man who bought Porsche Taycan EV for $152,516 in disbelief at how much it's depreciated in less than a year after getting several quotes
The MacMaster

He was left in disbelief when he saw how much his car had depreciated in under a year.

It’s certainly something for people to bear in mind when it comes time to buying an electric car.
