Losing track of your dog is frightening under any circumstances, but it’s especially stressful when you’re camping or hiking far from cell service. Now, a dog tracker designed for adventurous pups can keep tabs on your furry best friend from space.
Pet technology company Fi launched a dog tracker that uses T-Mobile’s T-Satellite, enabled by SpaceX’s Starlink service, to monitor a pet’s whereabouts should they venture beyond the reach of cellphone towers. Fi Ultra is designed to track a dog’s location anywhere in the U.S., leveraging satellite connectivity to avoid a pet owner’s worst nightmare.
“Fi Ultra has transformed what’s possible for dog owners,” Jonathan Bensamoun, co-founder and CEO of Fi, said in a statement. “Our mission has always been to strengthen the human-animal connection via data, to give dogs more freedom while keeping them safe.”
Find my dog
The dog tracking device is the first product, besides cellphones, to use Starlink’s direct-to-cell service to power its main feature.
While other GPS trackers lose connectivity where cellular coverage ends, Fi Ultra automatically switches from LTE to T-Satellite should the dog travel to an area where networks are out of reach.
When placed on a regular collar or harness, the device provides dog owners with location data on their pet’s whereabouts. It also comes with a ‘callback’ feature that uses sounds or vibrations to try and guide dogs back to their owners on command.
Should owners lose sight of their dogs, they can activate a ‘Lost Mode’ on the app for heightened tracking. Owners can also enlist the help of others by activating a ‘Search Party’ feature that alerts nearby users, who can then use their app to help find the lost dog.
The dog tracker is mainly designed for trailblazing dogs and their owners, helping people find their pets while on hikes or in rural areas with limited connectivity. But you could also get it if you’re extra paranoid about losing your pet. The company offers different-sized tracking devices for smaller dogs or cats, although those devices are equipped with regular GPS.
Orbital connectivity
T-Mobile’s T-Satellite utilizes the Starlink constellation to turn regular smartphones into satellite communicators when they’re beyond the reach of cellphone towers. The idea is to provide service directly from space, maintaining connectivity in remote areas.
T-Mobile began offering its T-Satellite service in 2025, and now we’re beginning to see new types of applications for other commercial devices.
Aside from SpaceX, Texas-based startup AST-SpaceMobile is also working on building its own constellation for direct-to-cell service.
