Sporting Kansas City has emerged as the top suitor for Mohamed Salah in MLS as the club plots an ambitious summer, sources briefed on the situation tell The Athletic.
To be clear, any MLS club signing Salah is viewed as a longshot due to the Saudi Pro League’s heavy interest in bringing him to the league — and that’sif Salah opts to depart European soccer this summer at all. Sources indicate Salah prefers to remain in Europe, but, as he mulls his options, he remains open to a move to MLS. The 34-year-old forward previously announced he would leave Liverpool after a legendary run with the Premier League club.
Sources indicate multiple MLS clubs registered at least some interest in Salah, but Sporting currently sits in pole position to sign the Egyptian star if he comes across the Atlantic. Salah’s club future is now at the forefront after he and Egypt were eliminated from the World Cup just three days ago following a dramatic round-of-16 loss to Lionel Messi’s Argentina.
Sporting’s new majority owner, Peter Mallouk, is the son of Egyptian immigrants.
Salah is not the only big-money player Sporting KC is chasing this summer. The team is looking to make good on a promise of spending more money and increasing ambition as the club evolves into its next era.
Sporting KC continues to work on possible deals for Toulouse winger Yann Gboho, as first reported by The Athletic last month, as well as Olympiacos winger Andre Luiz. Sources confirm an initial report from Greek outlet Sport24 that the MLS club is in talks for the left-footed Brazilian.
Either deal would be among the most expensive fees in league history pending final agreements and decisions, with both being discussed in the range of $18-20 million. Negotiations for Luiz are further advanced than Gboho, sources add.
Gboho, 25, is a former France youth international who just wrapped up his best season with 10 goals and three assists in 35 appearances across all competitions. Born in Ivory Coast, Gboho declared in March he wanted to switch to represent the Les Elephants. He was not part of their World Cup roster.
Luiz, 24, only joined Olympiakos in January for a reported fee around $7 million but could move again for nearly triple that fee. The Flamengo academy product had seven goals and six assists in the first half of last season in Portugal with Rio Ave FC in 1,501 minutes, his best-ever stretch.
As for Salah, he had a disappointing 2025-26 season for Liverpool, with seven goals and seven assists in 2,150 Premier League minutes. The came on the heels of what was improbably his career-best league season in 2024-25, leading Liverpool to the title with 29 goals and 18 assists in 3,380 league minutes.
It was announced in March he would be leaving the English club after a hugely successful nine-year stay. His final year at Anfield coincided with a breakdown in his relationship with the team’s now former head coach Arne Slot.
Sporting KC is in a transitional season, the first in a new era following the departure of club legend Peter Vermes as chief soccer officer and head coach as well as a change in majority ownership. New chief soccer officer David Lee is looking to build out the sporting infrastructure and overturn a roster that had failed to evolve with the league in recent years.
Rapha Wicky was named head coach this winter and, after an extremely slow start, the team got more competitive in the games leading up to MLS’s World Cup break. SKC still sits bottom of the Western Conference with 11 points after 14 matches.
The club currently has two DPs: Dejan Joveljic and Manu Garcia. It can add a third this summer if it chooses and seems intent on doing so.
