It’s a simple concept: one person stands up and waves both hands upwards in the manner of frenziedly shushing a stray cat away with the backs of their hands. A person next to them performs exactly the same action a millisecond later. As does the next. Ad infinitum.
Do this with 90,000 people in a stadium at great pace and a Mexican Wave can look spectacular.
It’s become a fairly common sight at soccer matches, including at this World Cup, and indeed other sports for many decades now, but where did it begin?

Well, for a start, despite the name, no one seems to believe it started in Mexico. It’s not a definitive answer, but American cheerleader “Krazy George” Henderson claims to have started it during an Oakland versus New York baseball playoff game in October 1981.
“I took three sections and I organized them,” he said. “It swept around the whole place; it was like a freight train going around the place.”

U.S. college football team the Washington Huskies also claim to have invented the wave via their cheerleader The Yell King that same month, with both parties disputing the account of the other.
Initially starting with fans waving from the bottom row to the top (a “waterfall in reverse”), Washington tried the sideways route.
“The cheering literally swept around Husky Stadium in waves last Saturday, the fans in this section, then the next and the next, leaping to their feet on cue,” was how it was described in one publication after the game.
Either way, the crowd phenomenon literally swept around sports stadiums in the coming years. It could be seen sporadically at the 1984 Los Angeles Olympic Games, or even during a basketball game in the Michael J Fox film Teen Wolf in 1985.
Why is it called the ‘Mexican Wave’?

At this point, it was called “The Wave,” which is generally how it is still referred to in the U.S. The following year, however, The Wave was seen by a global football audience for the first time during the 1986 Mexico World Cup, which is when the Mexican moniker was added to the title. In Mexico, it became “La Ola Mexicana.”
At the time, the Mexican Wave was seen as pretty cool and fun. As the years have passed, it now often denotes a sign of crowd boredom (certainly during England matches at Wembley, for example) and is more common during international games, or sometimes during celebratory club matches, charity games, or testimonials.
