A veteran Los Angeles police detective is suing the LAPD, alleging the department retaliated against him after he investigated the suspicious death of a billionaire’s daughter and uncovered what he describes as efforts to cover up critical failures in the case.

Detective Alexander Tan, a decorated officer formerly assigned to the Van Nuys Division Narcotics Enforcement Unit, says the retaliation began while he was investigating the 2023 death of Amelia Salehpour.

Salehpour was the daughter of billionaire microchip supplier Ali Salehpour and his wife, Suzanne. The couple is separately suing the Van Nuys Superior Court, alleging their daughter—who they say had the cognitive abilities of an eighth grader—was improperly allowed to leave Saddleback Recovery in Costa Mesa with an ex-boyfriend known as “Raider.”

The family believes Amelia was being groomed for sex trafficking before she was found dead in the garage of a Van Nuys home. The city has denied owing her a duty of care.

According to Tan’s lawsuit, he and his partner uncovered “unlawful conduct, statutory violations and deliberate efforts to conceal the truth” surrounding her death.

The lawsuit alleges the LAPD retaliated by isolating Tan, depriving his unit of resources, dismantling the narcotics unit and ultimately transferring him to separate him from his longtime investigative partner in an effort to “weaken, silence, and break apart” the team.

The complaint also alleges that in July 2023, Ali Salehpour took an LAPD sergeant to what the family believed was a Van Nuys “flop house” where Amelia may have been trafficked.

The LAPD cared more about covering up evidence of its complicity in the woman’s death than in investigating how she died and holding the perpetrators responsible, the suit alleges

Although the sergeant inspected the property twice, the lawsuit alleges he failed to thoroughly search the home, including the garage, where Amelia’s body was discovered the following day. Her family says her body was found beside syringes and a burned spoon as well as a sticky black substance.

Tan further alleges homicide detectives improperly classified Amelia’s death as an accidental overdose rather than opening a homicide investigation despite what the lawsuit describes as visible signs of strangulation.

The complaint alleges the misclassification was an intentional effort to conceal the department’s alleged negligence rather than a simple investigative mistake.

“Plaintiff could not stomach this behavior by department supervisors and he blew the whistle,” the lawsuit states.

According to the complaint, Tan was later ordered by a captain to stop communicating with the Salehpour family, with command staff allegedly telling him, “We’re not helping the family sue us.”

Tan alleges the department dismantled his unit, left it without adequate staffing or resources, refused to cover overtime for court appearances and eventually transferred him to the North Hollywood Division, separating him from his investigative partner.

In 2025, Salehpour’s mother told The Los Angeles Times, “The LAPD let our daughter down, they let our daughter die in that house. They made the decision that our daughter was a drug addict and mentally ill and they treated her that way.”

In the same LA Times feature, Salehpour’s family discussed their daughter’s troubled life, which included multiple suicide attempts and drug use.

The lawsuit seeks damages for lost income, emotional distress and alleged retaliation.
