David Sanchez, brother of Spain’s Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez, has been convicted of administrative misconduct and handed a nine-year ban from holding public office, marking a fresh political setback for the Socialist leader.
The ruling stems from his 2017 appointment to a senior cultural position by the provincial government of Badajoz. This latest development adds to a series of corruption-related investigations and scandals that have plagued the Prime Minister’s government and inner circle over the past two years.
Just last month, a former close aide to Mr Sanchez received a 24-year prison sentence in an unrelated corruption case, highlighting the ongoing challenges.
David Sanchez had been accused of benefiting from an appointment specifically tailored to him due to his family connection to the prime minister, who dismissed the accusation as part of a politically-motivated campaign driven by the far right.
The Badajoz court found that the position awarded to Sanchez, overseeing the province’s music conservatories, was created without any genuine administrative need and responded instead to his personal interests.
“The defendants engaged in a grossly arbitrary exercise of power with the sole aim of favouring specific individuals,” the ruling said, adding that one of the posts was later modified to accommodate David Sanchez’s interest in opera.
The ruling can be appealed.
On May 26, the Spanish police searched the headquarters of the ruling Socialist Party as part of an ongoing investigation into possible financial wrongdoing.
The Civil Guard said that the police were under judicial orders to find material relevant to a National Court probe into accusations of corruption against a former party member involved in a state-run company.
At a news conference in Rome after meeting Pope Leo, Sanchez stressed that a request for documents did not constitute a police search, adding that the party was fully cooperating with the courts and had absolute respect for the judiciary.
Separately in May, a different court said it was investigating former Prime Minister José Luis Rodríguez Zapatero for alleged influence peddling and other possible crimes tied to a government airline bailout. He has denied any wrongdoing.
Sánchez’s wife is also being probed over allegations of influence peddling, which she has denied.
And, most damning for the Socialists, a former minister under Sánchez and a senior party official are both being investigated on allegations they played a part in a kickback ring that started during the COVID-19 pandemic, which they have denied.
Sánchez, prime minister since 2018, has called the cases against his family a “smear campaign.” But the corruption case against his former cohorts led him to ask the nation for “forgiveness” in 2025.
