The Athletic has live coverage of France vs Spain in the 2026 FIFA World Cup semifinals.
Neither France nor Spain have had a player sent off at this World Cup, but their semi-final referee has already produced one of the tournament’s most memorable red cards.
Ivan Barton made history during Paraguay’s 1-0 group-stage victory over Turkey when he became the first referee at a World Cup to dismiss a player for covering his mouth during a confrontation. Miguel Almiron was sent off following a video review in first-half stoppage time.
Barton’s next assignment is the World Cup semi-final between FIFA’s world No 1, France, and third-ranked Spain, the European champions and The Athletic’s tournament favourites.
France reached the last four by defeating Morocco 2-0 in the quarter-finals, while Spain beat Belgium 2-1. Spain have conceded just once at the tournament, and France have scored 16 goals and are attempting to reach a third successive World Cup final.
Who is the referee?
Barton, 35, will take charge of the match and has been a FIFA-listed international referee since 2018.
He was born in Santa Ana, El Salvador’s second-largest city. He studied chemical sciences at the University of El Salvador and previously worked as a professor of organic chemistry alongside his refereeing career.
He began officiating in El Salvador’s top division during the 2014-15 season and has since become a regular appointment across Concacaf competitions, including the Gold Cup, Nations League and Champions Cup. He has also worked at the Olympic Games and Club World Cup.
This is Barton’s second senior World Cup. At Qatar 2022, he refereed Japan’s 2-1 victory over Germany, Brazil’s 1-0 win against Switzerland and England’s 3-0 round-of-16 victory over Senegal.
The expert view
Analysis from referee expert Graham Scott
If a referee can ever ‘shoot to fame’, the official in charge of the first World Cup semi-final between France and Spain certainly had a shot at becoming an overnight sensation earlier in the tournament.
Ivan Barton, from El Salvador, became the first referee to send off a player under the new law barring them from covering their mouths while confronting an opponent.
After watching the incident at the pitch-side monitor, Barton returned to the field and delivered his verdict to Miguel Almiron with considerable gusto.
“After review! Number ten! Paraguay! Cover his mouth! Decision is red card!”

Almiron’s dismissal aside, Barton has kept a low profile in draws between Japan and Sweden in the group stage and Switzerland and Colombia in the first knock-out round.
This is his second World Cup. His games in Qatar included Germany’s shock defeat to Japan and England’s 3-0 win over Senegal in the round of 16.
While his card count is normally around average, Barton reduced the U.S men’s national team and Mexico to nine men each in a 16-minute spell late in their 2023 Concacaf Nations League semi-final. He then called time early due to homophobic chanting in the crowd.
He will be hoping for a quieter time of it on Tuesday and I wish him well, while secretly hoping he has to overturn a decision so we get to hear another on-field announcement.
Who are the assistant referees and VAR?
Barton will be assisted by David Moran of El Salvador and Nicaragua’s Antonio Pupiro. They have worked alongside him during each of his previous three appointments at this World Cup and are regular members of his officiating team in Concacaf and FIFA competitions.
Sweden’s Glenn Nyberg is the fourth official, with compatriot Mahbod Beigi acting as the reserve assistant referee. Nyberg is an experienced international referee and has taken charge of three matches at this tournament.
The lead video assistant referee is Poland’s Tomasz Kwiatkowski. He will be supported by Dutch official Dennis Higler and Mexico’s Guillermo Pacheco.
Kwiatkowski is an experienced specialist video official and led the VAR team for the 2022 World Cup final between France and Argentina.
Have the officials been involved in any notable incidents?
The law to send players off for covering their mouths when speaking to an opponent in situations of confrontation was introduced at this summer’s World Cup, and Barton became the first referee to hand out a historic red card for the offence when he dismissed Almiron against Turkey. His announcement of the decision went viral on social media.
The provision was approved by the International Football Association Board (IFAB), the game’s lawmakers, in April at FIFA’s request as part of an attempt to combat discriminatory abuse. Despite the rule change, it has become a point of contention at the World Cup.
The wildest World Cup conspiracy theories
Outside of this summer’s tournament, Barton was also in charge of an ill-tempered Concacaf Nations League semi-final between the U.S. and Mexico in Las Vegas in June 2023 when four players — Weston McKennie and Sergino Dest of the U.S. and Mexico’s Cesar Montes and Gerardo Arteaga — were sent off during the second half of the hosts’ 3-0 victory.
The match was also repeatedly disrupted by homophobic chanting from sections of the crowd. Play was stopped in the 90th minute and, after 12 minutes of added time were indicated, Barton ended the game during the eighth minute of stoppage time when the chanting resumed.
Kwiatkowski, meanwhile, led the VAR team for Argentina’s 3-0 group-stage victory over Algeria at this World Cup. The Algerian Football Federation complained to FIFA about the officiating, highlighting challenges by Lionel Messi on Aissa Mandi and Alexis Mac Allister on Ibrahim Maza that went unpunished.
The Polish official was also the VAR for Paris Saint-Germain’s controversial 1-1 Champions League draw with Newcastle United in November 2023. Kwiatkowski recommended an on-field review after the ball deflected from Tino Livramento’s chest onto his elbow and referee Szymon Marciniak awarded Paris Saint-Germain a stoppage-time penalty, converted by Kylian Mbappe, and UEFA removed Kwiatkowski from his scheduled VAR appointment the following evening.
Which games has Barton refereed at this World Cup?
- Group stages: Turkey 0-1 Paraguay
- Group stages: Japan 1-1 Sweden
- Round of 16: Switzerland 0-0 Colombia
