FIFA is set to wait until after the World Cup before issuing sanctions to players and coaches who have brought the game into disrepute.

Throughout the tournament, match officials have been on the receiving end of fierce criticism, including from England head coach Thomas Tuchel, Switzerland defender Manuel Akanji and Egypt coach Hossam Hassan.

FIFA declined to comment on any current or potential disciplinary proceedings, but sources with knowledge of the situation said that action could be taken post-tournament.

Any such sanction that may be taken by FIFA will depend on the referees’ reports and other contributing factors.

It was not until after the World Cup in Qatar four years ago that world football’s governing body sanctioned several member associations.

Following England’s win over Mexico in the round of 16, which saw defender Jarell Quansah sent off, Tuchel criticised referee Alireza Faghani.

“It’s not good enough,” Tuchel said of the Australian’s officiating. “He (the referee) can send any team out in any moment. It’s just not good enough. It’s just erratic, it’s just unreliable in matches.

“Now, we have two fourth officials who just scream at you if you put one foot out of a coaching zone. It’s just not good enough.”

The strongest criticism, however, came after Egypt’s defeat by Argentina in the round of 16, with French referee Francois Letexier on the receiving end of it.

“We were the best in everything, but the result was … there were factors influencing it, not external, but internal on the pitch, and external before the match,” Hossam said after the game.

“It is clear that the pressure put on the referee before the match by the Argentine side succeeded, because they objected to the referee, bringing up France, and the France national team. There seems to have been pressure on the Argentine side on the referee that has brought about this outcome.”

Mostafa Ziko, the Egyptian striker, went further, saying that Letexier “wasted all of our efforts with his decisions.”

“We were leading 2-0 and we cannot do anything, it’s all up to God,” Ziko said after the defeat. “We wanted to make you all happy. It was not in the cards. It was the referee. The cup is directed towards Argentina.”

Akanji, the former Manchester City defender, also took aim at officiating after his Switzerland side were beaten by Argentina in the quarter-final.

“When you have the referee against you, it becomes difficult,” Akanji said of referee Joao Pinheiro. “Every little thing was called against us. Every dive and every foul by the Argentinians went unpunished.

“I don’t usually say anything against the officials, but I’ve never experienced such a one-sided game as today.”

In other competitions, including the Premier League, such comments would quickly lead to a fine or touchline suspension, yet FIFA is keeping its counsel until after the tournament.

FIFA’s chief refereeing officer, Pierluigi Collina, hit back at the allegations that match officials can be influenced after suggestions they are biased towards Argentina.

“Nobody can question the integrity of the FIFA World Cup match officials,” Collina said in a statement on July 9. “When this happens, it may provoke reactions that lead to threats against them and their families. This is not right.”
