Just when you thought the competitive Pokémon scene was cruising along on a nice, smooth path, The Pokémon Company decided to drop a massive, unexpected thunderbolt.
In a brand-new update to the Pokémon UNITE Championship Series, they revealed that our favorite pocket-monster MOBA is officially getting booted from the 2027 Pokémon World Championships.
Instead of sharing the main stage with the trading card game and the main-series video games, UNITE is being sent to its own dedicated, standalone tournament: the Pokémon UNITE Aeos Crown 2027 in Tokyo, Japan.
The Collective Sigh Heard Across Social Media
To say the community is feeling some major heartbreak would be a massive understatement. If you take a quick stroll through social media, the vibes are incredibly heavy. Long-time casters and players who have dedicated years of their lives to building this scene are feeling the sting.
Caster Evan Hashimoto shared that having worked the Worlds circuit for nearly a decade, hearing this might be his last year on that specific stage really hurts.
“UNITE deserved better,” he said.

Other fans are echoing the sadness, praising the incredible hype that UNITE teams always brought to the massive global event, and hoping that their favorite regional players can still find a way to make it to the new Tokyo league.
UNITE has always been a bit of an underdog, but its community has consistently punched way above its weight class when it comes to raw passion.
Why This Split Might Actually Make Sense
While it feels like a demotion on paper, stepping away from the massive shadow of the mainline Pokémon games might actually be the best thing that ever happened to competitive UNITE. When you are sharing a venue with the TCG, Pokémon GO, and the latest mainline RPGs, it is incredibly easy to get lost in the shuffle.
By spinning off into the Aeos Crown 2027, the game gets to be the absolute star of its own show. The offline final tournament in Tokyo is planning to host up to 32 qualified teams from all over the world, complete with paid travel awards for the winners of the regional qualifiers.
Starting in November 2026, players will compete in online regional qualifiers under a newly unified global rule set.
Tokyo is Not a Bad Consolidation Prize
If you have to get evicted from the World Championships, getting an all-expenses-paid trip to Tokyo for a massive 32-team offline brawl is about as good as a consolation prize can possibly get. The tournament organizer is still promising a prize pool, and having a dedicated arena focused entirely on 5v5 score-stacking and Zapdos fights could give the game the exact hyper-focused spotlight it needs.
It is the end of an era for the unified Pokémon Worlds family, but the competitive spirit of UNITE is far from dead. It is just packing its bags and heading to Japan for a solo vacation.
