Thursday’s live broadcast of NBC‘s Today show took an unexpected turn after an incident at the network’s New York City headquarters. The morning show continued as planned until a man breached security and entered the studio. Police responded to the location, and officials later confirmed that an investigation was underway.

The incident happened on the morning of July 16 at NBC’s studio inside 30 Rockefeller Plaza. According to PEOPLE, a man managed to get past security and enter the studio during the live broadcast. He reportedly asked for longtime Today co-host AI Roker after entering the building. The intruder then confronted co-host Craig Melvin and shouted racial slurs.
Police arrived at the scene shortly afterward and took the man into custody. The New York Police Department said officers responded at about 9:19 a.m. after receiving reports of a disorderly person inside 30 Rockefeller Center. No one at the studio was hurt during the incident.
In its statement, the NYPN said, “Officers responded and placed an unidentified individual into custody. There were no injuries reported. The investigation remains ongoing.”
Despite the disruption, Roker, Melvin, and the rest of the Today team stayed on air and continued the live broadcast. The incident did not interrupt the rest of the morning’s program.
NBC has not released an official statement about what happened. Representatives for the show also did not immediately respond to PEOPLE’s request for comment.
The incident happened on the same day Savannah Guthrie announced she would be taking a short break from Today. During Thursday’s show, she told viewers she would spend the next few weeks filming a new Wordle game show.
Authorities did not share the identity of the man or explain how he got past security. The investigation is still ongoing as the police continue to gather more details about the incident.
