This World Cup has been hot and, at times, stormy.
Spread across the United States, Canada and Mexico, it was always likely to be thewarmest edition since the previous World Cup in North America, when the U.S. hosted it solo in 1994.
While extreme heat and humidity have affected how matches are played, thunderstorms have also provided logistical challenges — Spain’s final training session ahead of the final was delayed today (Saturday) due to lightning in New Jersey.
Under the thunderstorm protocol in place, a match must be suspended if lightning or electrical discharge is detected within an eight-mile radius of the stadium involved. Once that happens, a 30-minute countdown begins, but resets if another strike is detected before it ends. On June 22, the Group I match between France and Iraq became the first World Cup game delayed by the storms, stopping for more than two hours.

Hot and humid today in Miami, with temperatures near 90F (32C) this afternoon. The heat index will be near 102F (39C). This extreme heat could lead to heat-related illnesses for players and fans. If you’re in Miami for the game, take extra precautions, such as hydrating and wearing lightweight, loose-fitting clothing.
It will be mostly sunny, hot, and humid, with only a slight chance of showers and thunderstorms (20 per cent chance).
At 5pm, the temperature will be 89F (32C), with a 20 per cent chance of a shower or thundershower, and winds out of the southeast at five to 15 miles per hour.
I will monitor this game for any lightning delays, but the chance of a delay is low.
