Spain’s players dominated the 2026 World Cup awards, winning three individual accolades after their 1-0 win over Argentina in Sunday’s final.

After leading his side to glory, midfielder and captain Rodri won the World Cup Golden Ball award, presented to the best player at the tournament.

Unai Simon has won the Golden Glove award for best goalkeeper at the World Cup, while defender Pau Cubarsi took home the Young Player Award — the award for the best player who was born on or after January 1, 2005.

Those awards are chosen by FIFA’s Technical Study Group, which comprises ex-pros, coaches and analysts. The World Cup Golden Boot award, for the tournament’s top scorer, went to France’s Kylian Mbappe. The France captain scored 10 times and recorded four assists, going clear of Argentina’s Lionel Messi with a second-half brace in Saturday’s 6-4 third-place play-off loss to England.

This summer’s World Cup marked the second consecutive major tournament in which Rodri, 30, played a pivotal role in his side’s success. He was named the Player of the Tournament in Spain’s victorious European Championship campaign two years ago, which led to him being awarded his first career Ballon d’Or that year.

Rodri started all eight of Spain’s matches this summer, winning all but the opening 0-0 draw against Cape Verde. He did not score or assist, but recorded strong passing metrics which allowed his side to control matches through possession.

His impressive tournament follows back-to-back injury-disrupted seasons with his club, Manchester City. He was a crucial figure for Pep Guardiola’s treble-winning team in 2022-23, and once again played a major role as his side won the Premier League title the subsequent season.

But since rupturing his anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) in September 2024, he has made just 38 appearances for City, and his 2025-26 campaign was bookended by hamstring and groin injuries. He only appeared in five of City’s 10 Champions League fixtures last season.

Injuries meant Rodri could only appear in six of Spain’s matches between their Euro 2024 triumph and this summer’s World Cup, but he returned to impressive levels in the United States, Canada and Mexico to help his nation win their first World Cup since 2010.

Simon, 29, is the second Spanish goalkeeper to win the award after Iker Casillas in 2010, the only other time that the nation has won the World Cup.

The Golden Glove award was introduced in 1994 and originally called the Lev Yashin award, after the legendary Soviet goalkeeper, before being renamed in 2010.

Entering the final, Simon had kept six clean sheets, the most at a single World Cup by any goalkeeper in the tournament’s history, with Belgium’s Charles De Ketelaere the only player to breach the Spanish defence. In the final, Simon had little to do as Argentina registered only two shots in 120 minutes of action, with neither troubling the Athletic Club goalkeeper.

Simon’s tally of nine total clean sheets across all his World Cup appearances puts him just one behind the record of 10 shared by Peter Shilton and Fabian Barthez.

Cubarsi, the 19-year-old Barcelona defender, played every minute of the tournament, in a Spanish defence which conceded just once in the entirety of the tournament.

This summer’s World Cup was Cubarsi’s first major international tournament, having not been in Luis de la Fuente’s squad for Euro 2024, though he was part of Spain’s Olympic gold medal-winning squad in Paris that year.

He formed an impressive central-defensive partnership alongside the more experienced Aymeric Laporte, having replaced Robin Le Normand — who featured throughout Spain’s successful Euro 2024 run — and been selected in the squad ahead of Real Madrid’s Dean Huijsen.

Mbappe has won the World Cup Golden Boot in successive tournaments, despite his side failing to reach the final this time around.

The top-scorer race came down to the final day as Messi trailed Mbappe by two goals heading into the final. Messi and Argentina failed to impress in the final, though, with the Inter Miami man managing only one shot, which was blocked.

Mbappe’s goals at this summer’s World Cup make him now the competition’s all-time top scorer with 22, surpassing Miroslav Klose’s (Germany), previous tally of 16. Lionel Messi also surpassed the previous record-holder’s total, having now scored 21 times on the world’s biggest stage.

Mbappe scored or registered an assist in each of France’s matches on their way to the semi-finals, before they were defeated 2-0 by Spain. He scored half of France’s 20 goals, and more than doubled his contributions from the 2018 triumphant tournament.
