Anne Hathaway recently addressed the creative decision behind excluding the olive tree bed from the movie. She discussed Nolan’s decision to cut the scene and explained how it benefited the story.

Christopher Nolan’s adaptation of The Odyssey leaves out one of the most iconic moments from Homer’s epic. Now, Anne Hathaway has revealed why Nolan excluded the scene from the film. The actress said the decision was about keeping the film focused on the emotional stakes surrounding Odysseus as the story approached its end.
During an interview with ScreenRant, Hathaway explained that the story had already reached a point where the audience was invested in whether Odysseus would survive. “I feel like by that point of the film, the momentum of the film is with wondering whether or not Odysseus is going to live,” she said.
The actress added, “And so taking a side trip to the bed chamber to be like, ‘Check out this bed…’ I feel like maybe that’s the unshot, unseen portion of their story in the days and weeks that followed, that moment, to the final moment, on the boat.I feel like she messed with him a little bit. I always thought of it as kind of like a prank.” In Homer’s poem, the olive tree bed plays an important role in Odysseus’ reunion with Penelope.
Nolan’s adaptation stars Matt Damon as Odysseus alongside Anne Hathaway as Penelope. The ensemble cast also includes Lupita Nyong’o as Helen of Troy, Zendaya as Athena, Charlize Theron as Calypso, Tom Holland as Telemachus, and Robert Pattinson as Antinous, among others.
Released in theaters on July 17, 2026, The Odyssey has received widespread acclaim. At the time of writing, the film holds a 95 percent critics’ score based on 384 reviews and a 97 percent audience score on Rotten Tomatoes.
