A judge will begin hearing evidence Tuesday that will determine whether singer D4vd should stand trial in the killing and dismemberment of a 14-year-old girl whom prosecutors allege he murdered to stop her from exposing their relationship.
Prosecutors allege 21-year-old David Burke, who performs as D4vd, lured Celeste Rivas Hernandez to the Hollywood Hills home he was renting on April 23, 2025, stabbed her multiple times and later dismembered her body in his garage with chain saws.
According to court filings, Burke sent a car to pick up the teenager from her hometown of Lake Elsinore, about 80 miles southeast of Los Angeles. The pair exchanged messages until she arrived at the house, after which her phone stopped communicating.
Prosecutors allege Burke killed the 14-year-old because she had threatened to reveal their relationship.
“Knowing he had to silence the victim before she ruined his music career as she had threatened, very soon after her arrival at his home, defendant stabbed the victim to death multiple times and stood by while she bled out,” prosecutors wrote in a court filing.
Burke has pleaded not guilty to murder, continuous sexual abuse of a child under 14 and unlawful mutilation of human remains. His attorney, Blair Berk, has said he is not responsible for Rivas Hernandez’s death.
The four-day preliminary hearing will serve as a mini-trial without a jury. Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Charlaine Olmedo will decide only whether prosecutors have presented enough evidence to proceed to trial.
It will also mark the first public presentation of the prosecution’s evidence.
Prosecutors say records show Burke purchased chain saws and plastic wading pools that were allegedly used to dismember the girl’s body. They also allege investigators found her DNA in bloodstains inside his garage when they executed a search warrant.
According to prosecutors, Burke kept the girl’s remains in the trunk of a Tesla registered in his name for months before the decomposing body was discovered after the vehicle was towed from the Hollywood Hills in September 2025. Prosecutors say surveillance footage shows Burke was the last person to drive the car.
Authorities arrested Burke in April after completing their investigation. Prosecutors have said witnesses had to be subpoenaed and the final autopsy report, which concluded Rivas Hernandez died from multiple stab wounds, was not completed until December.
Court filings allege Burke met Rivas Hernandez when she was 11 and began sexually abusing her when she was 13 and he was 18. Prosecutors say the teenager disappeared several times before her death and spent extended periods with Burke, including a trip to Texas where she met his family.
They also allege Burke falsely told investigators he had met the girl only once and did not know she was a minor. Prosecutors say they have recovered sexually explicit text messages and photographs exchanged between the two.
The defense has not publicly outlined its version of events beyond denying Burke’s involvement in Rivas Hernandez’s death.
Before his arrest, Burke had become one of music’s fastest-rising young stars. Recording under the name D4vd, he built a massive online following with songs blending indie rock, R&B and lo-fi pop.
His 2022 breakout hit, “Romantic Homicide,” has amassed more than a billion streams across platforms. He opened for SZA in 2023, performed at Coachella in 2025 and released his debut album just weeks before prosecutors allege Rivas Hernandez was killed. Her body was discovered while he was on tour promoting the record.
