President Donald Trump has shared a newly edited video from the World Cup final that removes his awkward moment with the winning team.
Trump joined FIFA President Gianni Infantino on stage at New Jersey’s MetLife Stadium to hand Spain the winning trophy after they defeated Argentina on Sunday.
After the trophy was handed over, Spain’s captain Rodri appeared to gesture for Trump to move on but the president lingered at the edge of the stage until he was ushered off by Infantino while the team celebrated their big win.
The incident was widely mocked online but the president has nonetheless celebrated his appearance with a new post on his Truth Social platform.
The 24 second clip keeps the trophy presentation and Trump shaking some of the players’ hands but cuts off before the president stands at the edge of the stage.
Another moment left on the cutting room floor was the Spanish team’s actual celebration, which saw a cannon blasting golden confetti into the air. As the confetti rained down around them, the Spanish players jumped and cheered as the crowd erupted.
On X, in an image of the trophy lift shared by the Spanish national team, Trump was notably absent. He was also missing in a photograph shared by FIFA’s account on X and was booed during the final itself.
Earlier in the tournament the president sparked controversy after he admitted calling Infantino over U.S. striker Folarin Balogun’s red card during the United States’ match with Bosnia and Herzegovina. Trump said that he had called to “wage a complaint,” with Balogun’s one match ban suspended for a year.
Infantino has insisted that the process was overseen by independent bodies within FIFA and FIFA described the move as a “a balanced measure.”
Trump was handed the first-ever ‘FIFA Peace Prize’ late last year, shortly after the Nobel Peace Prize the president covets was handed to Venezuelan activist María Corina Machado instead.
Spain’s World Cup win comes as the country’s relationship with the U.S. has become increasingly strained. In recent weeks, Trump has branded Spain a “wasted cause”, a “terrible partner in NATO” and suggested the U.S. should cut off all trade.
Trump has long complained about Spain’s military spending, with the European country refusing last year to adopt a new goal of spending 5 percent of its GDP on defense by 2035.
Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez has in turn accused Trump of playing “Russian roulette with the destiny of millions” and criticized the Iran war the U.S. launched alongside Israel in February.
