The 2026 summer transfer window has already delivered another flurry of eye-watering deals, with Premier League clubs once again setting the pace in Europe’s market.
England’s top flight has comfortably outspent its rivals, while clubs in Spain, Italy, Germany and France have also invested heavily in a bid to strengthen ahead of the new season.
English clubs dominate the biggest moves completed so far, accounting for all five of the largest transfer fees before July 23.
Central midfielders have emerged as the premium asset of this summer’s market, while Chelsea have once again demonstrated their willingness to spend whatever it takes to land their top targets.

5. Anthony Gordon (Newcastle United to Barcelona) – £69m
Few predicted Anthony Gordon would be the player Barcelona prioritised this summer, but the England international’s move to Catalonia could prove one of the smartest pieces of business of the window.
The Spanish champions have spent years navigating financial restrictions, making Gordon’s £69 million arrival all the more significant. While reports differ over the value of potential add-ons, the guaranteed fee is enough to place the winger among the biggest transfers of the summer.
Barcelona have long admired Gordon’s relentless work rate, direct running and ability to press from the front, qualities that make him a natural fit for Hansi Flick’s high-intensity system.
Still only 25, the former Everton man also offers the kind of long-term value the club have increasingly sought in the transfer market.
For Newcastle, the sale represents a sizeable profit on a player who developed into one of the Premier League’s most dangerous wide forwards.
Yet questions will inevitably be asked after Barcelona were repeatedly linked with Marcus Rashford before eventually turning their attention to Gordon.
4. Mateus Fernandes (West Ham United to Tottenham) – £85m
Tottenham wasted little time smashing their transfer record by agreeing an £85m deal for Mateus Fernandes.
The Portugal international became the first marquee central midfielder to change clubs this summer, setting the tone for what has quickly become the transfer window’s defining trend. Elite midfielders have never been more valuable, and Tottenham were prepared to pay.
Fernandes arrives after suffering relegation with West Ham, a circumstance that did little to diminish his reputation across Europe.
Comfortable receiving possession under pressure, capable of progressing the ball through midfield and mature beyond his years, he is viewed as a player around whom Spurs can build for the next decade.
The fee inevitably raised eyebrows. Spending £85m on a player whose previous club had just dropped into the Championship invited criticism, but Tottenham clearly believe the market has changed. Proven central midfielders in their early twenties are now commanding premiums previously reserved for elite forwards.
Only time will tell whether Fernandes justifies the price tag, but Tottenham have made it clear they believe he can become one of Europe’s outstanding midfielders.
3. Sandro Tonali (Newcastle United to Tottenham) – £92.5m
If Mateus Fernandes was Tottenham’s statement of intent, Sandro Tonali was the move that truly shocked European football.
The Italy international joined Spurs for an initial £92.5m, with the deal capable of reaching £100m through performance-related add-ons. It represents one of the biggest signings ever completed by a club not competing in the Champions League.
Tonali’s desire to leave Newcastle played a significant role. With a return to Serie A financially difficult, London emerged as his preferred destination, allowing Tottenham to capitalise on the situation.
Tonali brings experience, leadership and technical quality that instantly raises the level of their midfield, while his ability to dictate matches should help accelerate the club’s rebuild.
There will inevitably be those who argue Tottenham have overpaid. Spending close to £100m on any midfielder carries risk, but transfer fees continue to rise across Europe.
In the current market, Tottenham clearly decided this was the price required to secure one of the world’s elite midfielders.
2. Elliot Anderson (Nottingham Forest to Manchester City) – £116m
For a brief period, Elliot Anderson became the most expensive British footballer in history.
Manchester City agreed a staggering £116m deal to prise the midfielder away from Nottingham Forest, beating fierce competition for one of England’s brightest talents.
Manchester United had also monitored Anderson, but City’s willingness to break their own transfer record effectively ended the race.
The transfer also shines a spotlight on Newcastle’s decision to sell Anderson without inserting a sell-on clause.
Having departed St James’ Park for a comparatively modest fee, his extraordinary rise means the Magpies will not benefit from one of the biggest transfers in British football history.
City view Anderson as a cornerstone of their next generation. Dynamic in possession, relentless out of it and capable of influencing games in multiple midfield roles, he possesses the attributes required to thrive in Pep Guardiola’s demanding system.
