Jurgen Klopp has warned the media that if they “behave badly” he will leave the job on his unveiling as new Germany head coach.
The former Liverpool coach addressed journalists in a press conference on Friday, marking his return to management more than two years after he left the Liverpool dugout.
Klopp outlined his conditions for staying in the role to the media, saying if they “don’t want me anymore” or “don’t leave my family in peace” he will be “gone”.
The direct address to the press comes after his predecessor Julian Nagelsmann faced intense scrutiny and criticism from media and former members of the national team, intruding into his private life while in the role.
Klopp also criticised the “accuracy” of some reporting concerning his appointment and the agreements in place between the German football federation (DFB) and Red Bull, where he has been working as head of global soccer.
“We’ll need you (the press) on this path we’re taking,” he said. “It would be important if we prioritised accuracy over speed in our reporting going forward.”
Klopp replacesNagelsmann, who oversaw a disappointing World Cup round-of-32 exit to Paraguay this summer, on a deal to 2030 — running through the 2028 European Championship and the World Cup two years later.
He suggested on Friday that the national team coaching job could be his last, saying he “doesn’t have a career after the national team” and “ideally, this is the highlight of my career”.
The 59-year-old had been at the tournament in the United States, Canada and Mexico with German broadcaster Magenta. At one point, he expressed frustration with the media and walked out of an interview with ARD after a journalist asked him about Bastian Schweinsteiger’s divisive comments on the Ivory Coast team.
“No, no. I have no chance; I have no chance to answer this question,” he said, before walking away. “Everybody likes it, so you bring me into this situation. It’s not my job that everyone likes it, but this is a serious subject and I don’t even know what is appropriate to say.”
Klopp left Liverpool in 2024 after eight seasons and one Premier League title (2019-20). He will be joined in his return to the dugout by Pep Lijnders, who he worked with on Merseyside.
