The unpredictable free agency saga of LeBron James finally ended on Friday with the superstar signing a two-year deal with the Philadelphia 76ers, catapulting them to third on the 2027 NBA title oddsboard, behind only the San Antonio Spurs and Oklahoma City Thunder.
Joining the Sixers is yet another surprising free agency decision from James; Philadelphia was consistently listed with worse odds than the Miami Heat, Cleveland Cavaliers and Golden State Warriors to be his next team on DraftKings.
Philadelphia’s new star-studded frontcourt of James, Joel Embiid and Jaylen Brown joins a talented backcourt that features All-Star Tyrese Maxey and emerging second-year guard V.J. Edgecombe.

Philadelphia now among the Eastern Conference favorites
With the announcement of LeBron’s decision, Philadelphia jumped from sixth place among all NBA contenders — and fourth among Eastern Conference teams — to tied for third overall to win it all and tied for first among teams from the East.
Opening at +6000 odds this offseason, Philadelphia elevated to +2200 odds (fifth overall) after acquiring Jaylen Brown from Boston. Spiking to +600 odds after James immediately signed, Philadelphia eventually settled at +900 title odds at multiple sportsbooks — tied with the defending champion New York Knicks for best odds among Eastern Conference teams.
In the process, Philadelphia also leaped over Boston (+1300) and Miami (+3000) — who dropped from +1800 odds after missing out on James and Riley’s latest attempt at a new Big 3. Cleveland, which also saw its title odds rise from +3000 to +2500 on DraftKings over the last week, maintained its position in a tie for sixth among title contenders with the Toronto Raptors, Detroit Pistons, Minnesota and Denver.
Philadelphia is also a trendy pick to win the Eastern Conference now, with BetMGM reporting that 23 percent of bets – the most – are on the Sixers to win the Eastern Conference after James signed. While the Western Conference will still likely go through the two juggernauts in San Antonio and Oklahoma City, New York faces stiff competition from an emerging Eastern Conference that includes new-look Philadelphia, Boston with a healthy Jayson Tatum and Miami with Giannis Antetokounmpo.
Both the Knicks and Sixers now currently sit at +350 to win the East.
Philadelphia stuns again with signing of James
Philadelphia was entrenched as the clear No. 4 team in DraftKings’ market to sign James since the middle of June. After the 76ers’ shocking acquisition of Brown from the Boston Celtics earlier this offseason, the addition of James completes an incredible summer for Philadelphia.
DraftKings had 17 teams ahead of the Sixers in the market for where Brown would play in 2026-27, before Philadelphia’s stunning trade with Boston. Similarly undeterred by markets not favoring Philadelphia in its pursuit of James, the 76ers completed their unexpected overhaul to become one of the clear frontrunners for the 2026-27 season.
On July 2, Philadelphia was listed at +1000 odds behind Cleveland (-115), Golden State (+180) and Miami (+900) for the services of James. The Sixers dropped to a low point in the LeBron market on July 7, with their +1500 odds tied for fourth with the Minnesota Timberwolves and Denver Nuggets.
As Miami gained steam in the LeBron market behind Pat Riley’s cryptic public optimism, the Heat and Cavaliers continually flip-flopped as the DraftKings favorite to land LeBron during the week leading up to James’ eventual decision. Philadelphia closed at +700 odds on July 22 behind Miami (-200), Cleveland (+225) and Golden State (+450).
In the end, Philadelphia pulled off another stunning move by signing James.
