Apple TV and Mattel Studios have released the first official Matchbox The Movie trailer. In it, John Cena leads an action-packed movie based on the iconic Mattel brand. Matchbox The Movie is set to release on October 9, 2026, on Apple TV.
“Inspired by the iconic Mattel toys, Matchbox The Movie is an action-packed, globetrotting adventure about a group of friends since childhood who have their lives upended when undercover CIA agent Sean (John Cena), their long-absent former leader, returns to their small town and unwittingly gets them embroiled in a frantic international pursuit to save the world,” reads the film’s official synopsis.

What happens in the Matchbox The Movie trailer?
The first trailer for Matchbox The Movie highlights a group of friends who are thrust into a grand adventure. CIA agent Sean (Cena) returns to a small town and puts his childhood friends right in the middle of a world-saving pursuit.
Alongside Cena, Matchbox The Movie also stars Jessica Biel, Arturo Castro, Sam Richardson, Teyonah Parris, Danai Gurira, Golshifteh Farahani, Corey Stoll, and Bill Camp. The movie is directed by Sam Hargrave and written by David Coggeshall. David Ellison, Dana Goldberg, Don Granger, Robbie Brenner, Ynon Kreiz, and Jules Daly are producers on the project.
Matchbox The Movie is yet another entry in the long-running line of films made about an extremely popular IP. Mattel also has a litany of other projects based on its properties in the works, including movies about Hot Wheels, Barney, the American Girl dolls, Magic 8 Ball, and more.
