Utah Mammoth get: Vincent Trocheck
New York Rangers get: Sean Durzi, forward prospect Cole Beaudoin and a 2027 third-round pick.
Corey Pronman: Trocheck is a highly competitive and intelligent center who has been a very good two-way center over his career. He has fallen off a bit in recent years, but he is still a quality player. He is a good, albeit not great, small-guy skater who can make difficult plays. He works very hard and wins battles a guy his size shouldn’t, while being a great defensive center.
Beaudoin is a very likable player. He’s a tremendously hardworking center. He is constantly noticeable throughout the game in how many pucks he wins. He is quite physical and doesn’t shy away from getting to the tough areas of the ice, and he does so without taking bad penalties. He can create offense in junior, but because he has a somewhat heavy skating stride, the debate is in how his game will translate to the pros. He has good offensive skills and was a top OHL scorer this season, but he is not overly creative or instinctive with the puck for higher levels. Beaudoin projects as a third-line center.
In a few years, Beaudoin could be Trocheck quite likely, but Utah is trying to turn a corner now. I like this deal for the Rangers, who get a quality young player they can control for a while. They also get a very intelligent puck-mover in Durzi, although his skating/defense is a concern, and on a team with Adam Fox, I’m not quite clear where he fits.
Utah’s blue line looks worse on paper now, but this clears room for a young defenseman such as Dmitri Simashev to get more ice time.
Rangers grade: B+
Mammoth grade: B-
Sean Gentille: For a while now, there have been a few different versions of Trocheck floating through the discourse, and how you feel about this deal hinges on which you believe is the truest version. Is he a relatively key cog on an Olympic gold-winning team? Is he the versatile, reliable top-six piece the Rangers enjoyed from 2022 to 2025? Is he a soon-to-be-33-year-old coming off a relatively weak season? Is he a player who was at the top of a soft market and should have been moved months ago?
The answer to all of those questions, to some degree, is “yes.” The Rangers’ return, based on what it seemed like Trocheck could have gone for at the March trade deadline, is going to leave some folks underwhelmed. There isn’t a first-round pick or a blue-chip prospect headed back to Manhattan. Still, if you zoom out a bit from there, it’s reasonable enough.
Beaudoin, best case, seems to profile as a Trocheck-esque third-liner down the line, and Durzi is a useful, offensively tilted defenseman who is capable of playing on a second pair. They’re certainly closer to helping the Rangers in October than any package of futures would be. Not great for New York. Also not terrible.
Utah seems to have found the midpoint between the optimist’s opinion of Trocheck and the pessimist’s and paid accordingly. His fit on the Mammoth is what makes this a light win in their favor. He might not be a difference-maker. At this point, he might not even be a high-end second-line center. Still, the Mammoth’s forward lineup makes a whole lot more sense now than it did on June 30. Utah desperately needed a player with his profile to slot in behind Logan Cooley, eat some tough minutes and help them take the next step as a contender. Making it through the first round with Barrett Hayton in their top six probably would’ve been a no-go. With Trocheck in the mix, they’ll have a shot, and given the price, that should be good enough.
