Georgia car collector Ed Bolian bought a McLaren 570GT for a suspiciously low price.
The supercar is in good shape cosmetically, but it’s a mechanical nightmare.
Actually, to be more accurate, software glitches and electronics are doing most of the damage.
And there’s something that Bolian said that’s also a cautionary tale.
The ‘cheap’ supercar trap
A supercar isn’t like a watch or even a piece of tech.
If you can’t or won’t use it because it doesn’t work properly, it’ll still cost money.
If a watch doesn’t run properly, you can leave it in a drawer and forget about it.
With a supercar, you can – in theory – park it in a garage and forget about it, but there are a couple of caveats.
First, depending on your location, it’ll still cost you money in taxes and insurance.
For example, in Georgia, where this car collector is located, you can legally park it without insurance, but only if you officially cancel the vehicle registration.
Second, sitting unused will completely ruin it.
That’s why some supercars (or other luxury cars) end up on the market for sums that are so sometimes so low they almost appear symbolic.
In the case of this McLaren 570GT, it only cost its new owner – Ed Bolian – $26,000.
At this point, people would automatically assume there must be a catch and yep, there is one.
Actually, more than one.
And it’s worse than expected.
This McLaren has a fruit salad of issues
In his latest video, Georgia-based car collector Ed Bolian revealed that this 2017 McLaren 570GT came with a ‘litany of McLaren issues’ of various kinds.
In no particular order: there are random sensor errors, a glitchy transmission, a faulty steering column, unprovoked electronic hood lockouts, and an infotainment system that constantly forgets your preferred settings for the seats and the steering wheel.
The last item isn’t a deal-breaker on its own, but on a six-figure supercar, it adds insult to injury.
Ed Bolian also pointed out that he’s not alone, as this is apparently part of the McLaren experience.
“If you talk to any McLaren owner, their response of what they think about the car is, ‘It’s the best driving car I’ve ever had, but it is constantly broken and giving me trouble’,” he said in the video.
This explains the low price.
The McLaren 570GT starts at around $200,000 but imagine buying one that’s constantly marred with faults, costing you thousands of dollars a year in insurance and taxes, and then you’re potentially facing multiple five-figure bills to get it fixed.
You can either A, suck it up and pay up or B, cut your losses, get rid of the car, and the stress.
Clearly, whoever sold the car to Bolian went with option B.
