Lewis Carroll’s fantasy world is returning to the screen with a beloved character taking the lead role. According to a Deadline report, Amazon MGM Studios is currently developing an animated movie centered on the Mad Hatter, inspired by the classic Alice in Wonderland tales. While specific plot details remain under wraps, the project officially puts the iconic figure at the heart of his own standalone story.
The animated feature is being developed by Scott Mosier, the director of The Grinch (2018) and producer of several movies by Kevin Smith, including Clerks. The film is produced by Adam Nagle through Aniventure, an animation studio responsible for many projects for Amazon, Netflix, Paramount, and Sony.
What other Alice in Wonderland movies and TV shows have been made?
Over the years, there have been many versions of Alice in Wonderland. The most popular one is perhaps the animated Alice in Wonderland by Disney in 1951, which introduced audiences to Wonderland.
Tim Burton reimagined the story in 2010 with a live-action blockbuster featuring Mia Wasikowska as Alice and Johnny Depp as the Mad Hatter. The film became a massive success and was followed by another installment called Alice Through the Looking Glass in 2016.
On television, Carroll’s story has seen several notable retellings, including the star-studded 1985 miniseries, Hallmark’s 1999 television movie featuring Tina Majorino, and Syfy’s reimagined 2009 miniseries Alice. ABC further expanded the fantasy lore with its spin-off series Once Upon a Time in Wonderland during the 2013–2014 network season.
Similarly, Mosier has worked on multiple animated films. He wrote and produced Free Birds before co-directing The Grinch, which grossed $500 million across the world. He has also voiced multiple characters in Sing 2 and The Secret Life of Pets 2. Amazon MGM Studios has not yet announced an official release date or story details for the film.
