A longtime Homeland Security official has resigned from Donald Trump’s administration over what he has called the president’s “war on immigrants” and “brazen corruption,” marking a rare voice to criticize the administration after voluntarily leaving it.
Marc Rosenblum, Homeland Security’s top data analyst, announced his resignation on LinkedIn after more than 10 years at the agency.
“I’m sad to suspend my career in public service and leave my amazing team,” he wrote Sunday. “But it will come as no surprise that I’m thrilled to end my relationship with the current administration. Between the war on immigrants, the war on feds, and the war on facts (not to mention the crazy war in Iran and the brazen corruption), I just need a change.”
Rosenblum, who served under both Trump administrations as well as Joe Biden’s administration, first started working at the Office of Immigration Statistics in 2016 and eventually led the agency’s Office of Homeland Security Statistics, where he oversaw data collection for the entire department.
But that office has been shrinking under Trump’s second term, and civil rights groups and media outlets have sued to collect critical immigration information that has virtually disappeared from an administration that is touting itself as the most transparent ever.
The administration has stopped collecting some data altogether, leaving major gaps in the public’s access to accurate information about immigration, among other issues.
When he was promoted in 2023, Rosenblum promised to release data “more quickly” and with “greater granularity and covering a broader scope of DHS activities,” he told Federal News Network at the time.
But under Trump’s second administration, his office has not updated a data portal website with information about Immigration and Customs Enforcement detentions, Border Patrol arrests and deportations since February 2025.
Immigration analysts have argued that the information Homeland Security has released publicly, typically in social media posts and press releases, is unreliable and inconsistent.
Elizabeth Williams, a former policy adviser at Homeland Security, wrote that she was “dreading” Rosenblum’s exit.
“I’m glad at least it is on your terms, but I’m devastated for everyone — the public, bipartisan think tanks, watchdogs, etc — who have come to value and depend on the statistics you so fearlessly produced and defended for so long,” she wrote on LinkedIn.
“Today is a sad day for anybody who believes that government works best when decisions are informed by objective data analysis rather than pure politics,” wrote Blas Nuñez-Neto, another former Homeland Security official.
In his statement, which was first reported by Wired, Rosenblum praised his colleagues and suggested Homeland Security officials have suppressed their work. “My OHSS co-workers are outstanding career federal civil servants. They are smart, mission-focused experts who produce high-quality results in a challenging and often hostile work environment,” he wrote.
The Independent has requested comment from Rosenblum.
“People are always welcome to their opinion — that doesn’t make it right or factual,” a spokesperson for Homeland Security told The Independent. “We will not comment on personal decisions.”
Rosenblum is among several high-ranking Homeland Security employees who have left the agency at the center of the president’s mass deportation campaign since Trump returned to the White House but among only a handful to speak out against it.
Former ICE lawyer Ryan Schwank, who served as an assistant chief counsel and later as a legal instructor at the ICE Academy at the Federal Law Enforcement Training Center, resigned earlier this year.
Schwank, now a whistleblower against alleged constitutional violations inside the agency, told lawmakers during a congressional forum in February that recruits received a “blatantly unlawful order” to forcibly enter homes without a warrant. The academy is “teaching cadets to violate the Constitution, and they were attempting to cloak it in secrecy,” he said.
More than a dozen whistleblowing FEMA employees also signed a letter of dissent sounding alarms about Homeland Security’s inability to respond to disasters under the current administration. They were placed on administrative leave after issuing the letter, and their jobs were reinstated in April.
Rosenblum’s resignation is at least the seventh high-profile Homeland Security official to leave the agency in recent months after the president fired Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem in April. Her chief deputies Tricia McLaughlin and Corey Lewandowski have also left their posts.
Border Patrol Chief Mike Banks and Acting ICE Director Todd Lyons, two key figures in the administration’s efforts to swiftly arrest and deport thousands of immigrants, have also retired.
Lyons was among several former colleagues who congratulated Rosenblum on his resignation.
“Marc – it was great to work with you !” he wrote on LinkedIn. “Good luck with the next chapter !”
