The Argentine Football Association, three of its players and a coach are being investigated by FIFA for altercations at the World Cup final and the parading of the Falklands banner.
The disciplinary arm of world football’s governing body has opened proceedings against Leandro Paredes for three counts of assault, Nahuel Molina for two counts of the same offence, and Argentina coach Roberto Ayala for one count.
Molina is also being investigated for one count of unsporting behaviour, while team-mate Thiago Almada and Spain midfielder Gavi face the same charge, FIFA said in a statement on Wednesday.
Beyond the individual alleged breaches, the FIFA disciplinary committee has also opened proceedings against the AFA for “using a sports event for demonstrations of a non-sporting nature”, team misconduct, “discrimination and racist abuse” and “order and security at matches”.
These, FIFA say, relate to the display of “inappropriate messages” by the team and fans, and the “throwing of objects by spectators” in relations to “several” Argentina matches.
The South American side lost the World Cup final against Spain to an extra-time Ferran Torres goal after having Enzo Fernandez sent off on July 19. After the full-time whistle the world champions ran onto the pitch to celebrate their side’s victory but there were unsavoury scenes between the finalists.
Argentina defender Nahuel Molina appeared to strike Spain midfielder Rodri in the stomach before a wider melee saw his team-mate Leandro Paredes appear to grab Spain’s Eric Garcia by the throat before throwing his opponent Gavi to the ground. FIFA confirmed after the match that the clashes would be investigated via a disciplinary and ethics prosecutor.
The brawl was the one of multiple controversies associated with Argentina during their bid to defend their world title.

Following their win against England in Atlanta, its squad unfurled a banner during the on-pitch celebrations which read “Las Malvinas son Argentinas,” which translates to ‘the Malvinas are Argentine’.
Midfielder Giovani Lo Celso and defender Nicolas Otamendi held the banner, which appeared to have first been displayed by a section of supporters in the crowd. The banner was briefly put away, before then being laid out on the pitch at the Mercedes-Benz Stadium.
‘Las Malvinas’ is the term used in Argentina for the Falkland Islands, a British dependency which lies around 300 miles (480 km) off the east coast of mainland Argentina.
The International Football Association Board (IFAB), football’s lawmakers, and FIFA’s stadium code of conduct have a clear stance maintaining the prohibition of political flags, slogans and symbols being displayed.
The White House defended the Argentina’s football team’s right to free speech over the banner, however. Andrew Giuliani, the executive director of the World Cup task force, said the players had the “ability” to do so and pointed to the U.S.’s First Amendment rights over free speech.
