Gianni Infantino’s future leadership of FIFA was questioned by federations during meetings in which UEFA and Concacaf rejected his plans to sell stakes in the World Cup.
Both European confederation UEFA and Concacaf, the confederation of North, Central America and the Caribbean, held separate meetings on Thursday to discuss world football’s governing body’s proposals to sell a significant minority stake to private investors in a new entity that it, as a non-profit organisation, is setting up to run its main events, such as the World Cups and Club World Cups.
UEFA and Concacaf released statements rejecting the plans following their respective meetings, with UEFA announcing that all 55 European members would boycott all FIFA competitions unless the proposals were abandoned.
Sources briefed on the discussions at the UEFA meeting, speaking on the condition of anonymity to protect relationships, said that while Infantino’s position was not formally on the agenda, faith in him was questioned and his future as the leader of the global game was referenced in conversations.

The Athleticreported following the Concacaf meeting, one source with knowledge of discussions said the feeling and discussion expressed among the vast majority of Concacaf members was that they are losing confidence, or have lost confidence altogether in Infantino as FIFA President. A second person considered that to be a slightly stronger description of the meeting than they took away from it, but acknowledged widespread concerns over the current FIFA approach to leadership and transparency.
Concacaf and UEFA make up 90 of the 211 FIFA member associations.

Infantino, 56, has been FIFA president since 2016. His current term expires in 2027 and he is due to stand for re-election in March. Before the events of this week he had been expected to stand unopposed.
Before Infantino announced in April that he would be running for re-election, the sport’s governing bodies for Africa, Asia and South America all announced they would support his re-election bid.
FIFA announced its proposal on Tuesday. The new entity would be called FIFA Forward Enterprises (FFE) and would take over FIFA’s commercial operations, with the organisation itself remaining soccer’s global governing body and retaining a majority stake in FFE. A press release from FIFA said it was seeking to sell up to 21 per cent of FFE, aiming to bring in $4.2billion (£3.2bn). That money could be immediately released to its member associations.
Following significant backlash, Infantino said in an interview with FIFA that the proposal was “not an obligation” and reiterated it would need a majority of its 211 member associations and the FIFA Council to be implemented.
