Chinese memory manufacturer CXMT is the fourth-biggest memory maker in the world, and, chances are you’ve only heard of it recently. That’s because, just last week, its shares saw a 466% surge as it made its initial public offering, becoming one of China’s most valuable companies in the process.
It seems like CXMT could be set to become even more valuable as Nikkei Asia reports HP, Asus, and Acer are all said to be using its chips. Last month, many component makers started validating their products for Chinese memory, and this reportedly set the groundwork for some PC makers to use a “limited amount in their notebook computers”.
The limited quantity seems to be a decision made by both CXMT and partners. CXMT’s side is prioritising Chinese companies it has had prior working relationships with, like Huawei. Then, PC makers are reportedly only getting limited supplies to avoid angering “leading global memory chipmakers Micron, Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix.”
Reportedly, the notebook models with CXMT chips are selling in non-US markets. Asus declined to give a comment to Nikkei Asia and CXMT, and HP did not respond to requests. However, Acer told the outlet, “We do not disclose our suppliers, but that we keep in close contact with multiple global manufacturers and suppliers to dynamically adjust operations to manage component prices changes. We work with multiple manufacturers and suppliers to enhance our supply chain resilience.”
CXMT has been having a big couple of months and now takes up a 7% market share in Global DRAM revenue. The big three memory makers still account for more than 90% of the market share right now. Still, wider adoption of CXMT chips is good news for the Chinese company, and it seems like production could be getting bigger to accommodate the growth.
As reported by Reuters, CXMT is reportedly planning a second chip plant in Beijing. Reuters also claims it is building new plants in Shanghai and Hefei, and is looking to double capacity to 600,000 wafers per month.
Needless to say, that rapid expansion implies CXMT has long-term memory expansion goals, and that would make some sense as many major companies and analysts predict the memory crisis won’t end until 2029 at the least. Even Samsung, one of the big three, reckons we will see a “severe” memory supply crisis next year and “Beyond 2029, it is hard to say because of more limited visibility.”
SK hynix says “Customer demand will remain higher than our supply capacity even beyond 2030.”
And, in a sense, CXMT likely owes a lot to the memory crisis. With demand far outweighing supply (and the RAM in your computer going up in price as a result), it has left room for new entrants in the market that may have struggled in an abundant market, as companies look elsewhere for supply. It’s anyone’s guess how much CXMT will be worth by the end of the memory crisis, but it’s likely a lot higher than when it started.
