This guy spotted two abandoned Ferrari F40s on Google Maps and decided to go check them out in person.
When he got there, he was smacked in the face with a less-than-desirable reality.
Partly because these two cars weren’t in the same location, and so it took forever to actually find them.
But mostly because they weren’t Ferraris at all.
Calling this a ‘Ferrari’ would be a bit generous
Spanish YouTuber Georgesmithgood decided to check out two Ferrari F40s he’d spotted on Google Maps.
The two cars were located in totally different places, which means he’d probably built up some hope twice, and then gotten disappointed twice.
The first car was located in a small town near the Portugal border, in a remote barn where he found various old cars, one of which was a Ferrari F40.
Except that it wasn’t.
The F40 was actually just a replica based on a Pontiac Fiero.
And, as you can see from the picture below, it wasn’t particularly convincing when he got up close.
The second Ferrari that wasn’t a Ferrari was located several miles south, near the town of Valencia, and it was also a Pontiac Fiero-based replica.
The owner even offered to sell it to the YouTuber for $35,000.
Unsurprisingly, he said no.
This wasn’t a one-off
If we had a dollar for every time we spotted a kit car inspired by the Ferrari F40 we could probably afford a real F40.
Not only that, if we had another dollar for every time said kit car was based on the Pontiac Fiero, we could afford two F40s.
Due to its size and proportions, the Pontiac Fiero is often used as a ‘donor’ for kit cars, especially mid-engined supercars.
And it’s also quite cheap to buy and easy to find, which is a perfect combo.
Sometimes people decide to get more radical and use other cars.
On one occasion, we spotted an F40 kit car based on an Acura NSX.
Which is like destroying a perfectly good Rolex to create a fake Audemars Piguet.
