The Game of Thrones movie covering Aegon’s Conquest just got an exciting update regarding its release plan. HBO’s Game of Thrones franchise already expanded its TV universe with spinoffs House of the Dragon and A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms. And it was announced back in April that an Aegon’s Conquest movie was happening, too, covering Aegon I and his sister-wives’ campaign to take over Westeros.
Not much is known about the film, but a new update from Warner Bros. Discovery’s 2027 slate presentation offered a few noteworthy details (via Collider). The most exciting of them confirmed that the project will get a theatrical release, something the fantasy franchise desperately deserves. Seeing how Game of Thrones‘ battle sequences look on TV, it’ll be stunning to see its fiery, dragon-centered action on the big screen. It’s a relief this won’t be a straight-to-streaming film.
Of course, there’s one catch: the latest update also confirmed the timeline of the film’s release, placing it “beyond 2027.” It sounds like we might be waiting a while to see Aegon’s Conquest brought to life, but that’s just fine if the movie does this portion of George R.R. Martin’s history justice. Andor and House of Cards alum Beau Willimon is writing the script, which offers further hope on that front. If any A Song of Ice and Fire story is made for theaters, it’s this one.
Aegon’s Conquest Is the Ideal Story to Tell on the Big Screen
It’s great news that the upcoming Game of Thrones movie will get a theatrical release, as Aegon’s Conquest is the perfect story to tell on the big screen. It’s more straightforward than many of the other conflicts in George R.R. Martin’s world, so it should be possible to condense its plot into a film’s runtime. And given how action-heavy such a narrative would be, there’s a potential to turn it into a huge spectacle. It’d be worth doing so just to see Aegon’s dragon Balerion the Black Dread alone. It’s also a nice change of pace for the franchise after three television series. It’ll be an event, reigniting excitement surrounding Game of Thrones all over again. It’s poised to complement the TV shows in that regard.
