In 2026, RPG discussions usually circle back to some of the classic franchises: Final Fantasy, Dragon Quest, Persona, and others. Now, one of the best entries in an often-overlooked JRPG series is turning 19 years old.
Today, August 7, 2026, marks the 19th anniversary of the original Japanese release of Tales of Vesperia on the Xbox 360, which was the first time several other RPG series crossed over (or switched entirely) from PlayStation and Nintendo consoles to Microsoft’s platform. Tales of Vesperia is the 10th mainline entry in the series.
Tales of Vesperia follows the story of Yuri Lowell, a former imperial knight, in the world of Terca Lumireis. The world and people rely on blastia, which provide resources and protection to cities. Yuri gathers a crew of party members, including Estelle, a young woman with a secret power. Yuri marked the first time in the series for a less noble and more morally gray lead character for the series.
Unlike most of the earlier JRPGs, the Tales of series utilizes real-time action combat, with the player directly controlling only one character.
According to Metacritic, the original release of Tales of Vesperia is sitting comfortably at a 79 metascore. Critics praised the game’s plot, characters, and battle system. There was some criticism aimed at the game’s lack of innovation and polish for the overall Tales of series.
After its initial release, Tales of Vesperia was eventually ported to the PlayStation 3 in 2009, but the game was only released in Japan. That version of the game included two new playable characters: Patty Fleur and Flynn. Flynn has a brief playable guest party member segment in the original game but was not a permanent character.
In 2019, Tales of Vesperia: Definitive Edition, an HD remaster, was released on January 11 worldwide for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, PC, and Nintendo Switch. The Definitive Edition included the previous PlayStation 3-only content.
The latest game in the series, Tales of Arise, was released in 2021.
