On this day, 38 years ago, one of the greatest hip-hop groups we have ever seen released their first album, and it now ranks among the best.
August 8 marked an important day in music history for many reasons. Bob Dylan released his fourth studio album Another Side of Bob Dylan in 1964. Elvis Presley released his hit song Little Sister in 1961. And in 1936, legendary country singer Glen Campbell was born in Billstown, Arkansas.
But on August 8, 1988, the hip hop group N.W.A., which featured popular artists such as Ice Cube, Eazy-E and Dr. Dre, released their debut album called Straight Outta Compton.
Straight Outta Compton featured 13 songs, including some of hip hop’s best such as [Expletive]tha Police, Gangsta Gangsta, Express Yourself and the title track with the same name.
Straight Outta Compton is also considered the album that helped launch the gangsta rap genre while putting the West Coast on the hip-hop map. And it sold over three million copies worldwide, becoming triple-platinum in 2015.
Straight Outta Compton Ranks Among the Best Albums Ever
Straight Outta Compton is still widely considered one of the greatest hip-hop albums of all time and even inspired the 2015 N.W.A. biopic of the same name.
Even Rolling Stone things highly of N.W.A.’s debut album, recently ranking Straight Outta Compton No. 70 on its “500 Greatest Albums of All Time.”
The N.W.A. album joins other notable hip hop albums on Rolling Stone’s rankings, including Jay-Z’s Reasonable Doubt (No. 67), OutKast’s Stankonia (64) and Eric B. and Rakim’s Paid in Full (61). But the top rap album on the list goes to Public Enemy’s It Takes a Nation of Millions to Hold Us Back, which comes in at No. 15.
