Arsenal have confirmed the arrival of Bruno Guimarães from Newcastle United on a long-term contract, as announced on Arsenal.com.
After clinching the clubs first Premier League title in 22 years last season, Gunners boss Mikel Arteta has been trying to further strengthen his squad this summer. The Spanish coach wants to defend their title and go one step further in the Champions League after the painful penalty shoot-out defeat to Paris Saint-Germain back in May.
A new central midfielder has been on the agenda as Arteta wants to lighten the load on Declan Rice and Martin Zubimendi after both players appeared to run out of steam towards the end of last campaign.
Guimarães emerged as Arsenal’s prime target and the North Londoners have been locked in negotiations with Newcastle United in recent weeks after the Brazilian international made it clear he wanted to make the move to the champions.
A breakthrough was found early last week and Guimarães was given permission to leave the Geordies Spanish training camp. He flew in to London to undergo his medical and finalise terms with the Gunners.
Guimarães move confirmed
Those formalities have now been completed and Guimarães has been unveiled as Arsenal’s latest big-money signing. The club have confirmed on Arsenal.com that the 28-year-old has joined on a long-term contract – reportedly a four-year deal with an option of another year.
It has widely been reported that Arsenal have paid Newcastle £75m for Guimarães. Newcastle initially wanted more but with the player approaching his 29th birthday and having just one year left on his contract at St James’ Park, the Magpies settled on a lower figure.
Guimarães has now been posing in his new kit and it has also been confirmed he will wear the No.39 shirt number at Arsenal.
The South American will now link-up with his new team mates for pre-season training and may be unveiled in front of Arsenal fans before Sunday’s Emirates Cup clash with Borussia Dortmund.
Guimarães has developed into a top class central midfielder during his time at Newcastle having joined the club from Lyon in 2022. He should prove to be a superb addition to Arteta’s squad and may form a formidable partnership with Rice in the middle of the park.
