Tomorrow will mark the last House of the Dragon Sunday for quite some time, and the Season 3 finale is set to end this chapter of the Game of Thrones spinoff with a bang. After an entire outing of Lord Ormund Hightower’s scheming, Rhaenyra Targaryen’s forces will finally go after Tumbleton this week. The ensuing fight may not be on par with the premiere’s Battle of the Gullet, but it will no doubt deliver the action and emotion the franchise is known for — and leave us grieving a few characters in its wake.
There are a couple of obvious choices to go out during the First Battle of Tumbleton, based on Fire & Blood and everything set up in the previous episodes. But given that House of the Dragon isn’t afraid to take liberties with George R.R. Martin’s source material, I’d guess we could see a few casualties beyond them. These characters seem most likely to perish, and some of these losses we’d be sadder about than others.
Ormund Hightower

It seems inevitable that Lord Ormund Hightower will die in House of the Dragon Season 3’s finale, as he’s been such a problem for Rhaenyra Targaryen this season — and she has quite enough of those to deal with in the spinoff’s final chapter. Season 4 will need to determine who sits on the Iron Throne once and for all, and there’s no way it can continue juggling so many contenders. Also, as much as I love James Norton’s performance, it’s well past time for Ormund to go. Rhaenyra’s about to prove him wrong when she attacks Tumbleton, and it’ll be satisfying if that’s the end of his character arc.
Gwayne Hightower

Gwayne is probably the only Hightower I’d be sad to say goodbye to in House of the Dragon Season 3’s finale, and that’s plenty of incentive for the show to kill him. Gwayne has already outlived his book character, who perishes when King’s Landing falls to Rhaenyra in Fire & Blood. While I’d love to see House of the Dragon give him a happier future, this is the Game of Thrones franchise we’re talking about. Gwayne will likely be at the center of the action in the finale, giving the writers an ideal chance to take him out. It would be hard-hitting emotionally, and it would be somewhat poetic, given that he walked from one certain death into another.
Ser Roderick Dustin
Ser Roderick Dustin doesn’t get nearly enough screentime in House of the Dragon Season 3. But whenever he is around, he has a habit of declaring his enthusiasm over dying for the dragon queen. I fear that might happen in the finale, as HBO’s preview even sets it up. Daemon asks if he’s ready to perish, and he gives him a resounding yes. Perhaps the Game of Thrones spinoff will surprise us, but losing Roderick would be sad enough to give the upcoming battle weight and stakes…and not so massive that it would permanently alter the show going forward.
Helaena Targaryen

Helaena will be one of the House of the Dragon deaths that hurts the most, but if I’m being honest, I believed she’d be gone by now — and certainly before Season 4. In Fire & Blood, Helaena is said to have taken her own life after being confined to the Red Keep. That’s precisely what’s been happening this season, which makes me think it could end with her death. However, I’m not convinced the series will stick to the source material in this regard. Her dreams in House of the Dragon Season 3, Episode 7 are ominous, but they suggest she’ll have her baby and be wrapped up in battle first. If those visions come to pass, it’s possible Helaena will still be here until Season 4. Her arc could go either way, but I’m nervous nonetheless.
Corlys Velaryon

Killing Corlys Velaryon would be a big departure from Fire & Blood, but House of the Dragon has laid the foundation to do so. He’s not taken captive by the Greens in the source material; he becomes Rhaenyra’s prisoner after helping his son escape her paranoid order to arrest him. Corlys being at Tumbleton when it’s attacked doesn’t bode well for him, however. The Greens could see an opportunity to use him as leverage, the Blacks could deem him a traitor, or he could simply get caught up in the crossfire. It would be one way of motivating Addam and Alyn going forward. Of course, Corlys has a bigger role to play politically, so House of the Dragon would have to find a way around that. Like Helaena, this one’s a maybe — but still a possibility.
