Saturday delivered a busy programme of pre-season action across Europe, with several Premier League sides using the final weeks before the season kicks off to sharpen their preparations. Here is how things unfolded.
Leeds 2-0 RB Leipzig
The standout result of the day. Daniel Farke’s side produced an emphatic display against last season’s third-placed Bundesliga outfit, winning 2-0 across 120 minutes in front of 24,630 supporters at Elland Road as the club debuted their new home kit for the first time.
Dominic Calvert-Lewin continued his rich pre-season form by opening the scoring inside seven minutes, converting from close range after Joe Rodon drove forward from centre-back and delivered a precise ball across the face of goal.
Lukas Nmecha wrapped up the win in the final stages after a sharp combination involving Brenden Aaronson and Wilfried Gnonto, slotting in at the near post.
Brighton 3-0 Roma
Brighton produced their most convincing performance of pre-season with a three-goal victory over Roma at the Amex, giving Fabian Hurzeler plenty of encouragement on the eve of competitive action.
The Seagulls were fluid and forward-thinking throughout, with the attacking intent that defined their 2025-26 campaign visible from early in the match. Roma, preparing for the new Serie A season, offered limited resistance across 90 minutes.
Brighton’s striker situation remains the one point of discussion heading into the new season, but on the evidence of Saturday, their system has plenty of quality behind the final third.
Ipswich 3-0 Rayo Vallecano
A confidence-boosting result for Gary O’Neil’s promoted side, who hammered La Liga opponents Rayo Vallecano 3-0 at Portman Road to cap their home pre-season programme in style.
After a mixed run of results that included defeats to Osasuna and Oxford United, the manner and scoreline of this victory was exactly what Ipswich needed.
The result comes after a 1-0 win over Le Havre four days earlier and suggests the squad is hitting form at the right time. O’Neil will have been particularly pleased with the defensive organisation on display against technically capable Spanish opposition.
Tottenham 1-1 Getafe
A useful if inconclusive workout for Roberto De Zerbi’s Spurs at their Hotspur Way training ground. The match was shortened to 70 minutes behind closed doors, with Getafe breaking the deadlock in the 66th minute when Alberto Risco cut inside and finished past Antonin Kinsky.
Conor Gallagher levelled four minutes later with a surging central run and low diagonal finish into the far corner. Spurs remain unbeaten in pre-season after their 2-1 victory over Chelsea in Sydney.
Stuttgart 3-1 Everton
A difficult afternoon for Everton in Stuttgart, with the Toffees beaten 3-1 by the Bundesliga side in a result that will give their management pause for thought.
Everton had been building some momentum, a 2-1 win over Hamburg was a positive marker, but were second best for most of the match in Germany.
The scoreline flatters the visitors slightly given the control Stuttgart maintained across the second half. Everton face Newcastle in Edinburgh next on their pre-season schedule and will want a sharper showing.
Frankfurt 2-0 Hull
A tough afternoon in Germany for Hull City, beaten 2-0 by Eintracht Frankfurt in what was their sternest pre-season test to date. The promoted side have found results mixed since pre-season began, and Frankfurt’s intensity and technical quality proved too much to handle across 90 minutes. Li
Nottingham Forest 0-1 Udinese & 0-1 Barcelona
A chastening day in Italy for Forest, who played back-to-back matches in the Friuli Cup in Udine and lost both.
Udinese beat them 1-0 in the opening fixture of the afternoon, and then Barcelona followed up with a 1-0 victory in the second match at the same venue, completing a double blow for Oliver Glasner’s side.
Real Betis 2-2 Bournemouth
Bournemouth’s three-match winning run came to an end in Seville, where they were held to a 2-2 draw by a Betis side in impressive pre-season form.
Manuel Pellegrini’s team had beaten Arsenal 3-1 in their previous friendly and carried that confidence into a lively contest at La Cartuja.
Bournemouth, who had hammered Augsburg 5-2 and thrashed Genoa 10-1 behind closed doors earlier in the summer, showed enough to suggest their attacking depth remains a genuine strength, but were unable to hold on for a win against La Liga opposition.
Valencia 1-2 Newcastle
A positive result for Matthias Jaissle’s Newcastle, who came from behind to beat Valencia 1-2 at the Mestalla in the evening’s late kick-off.
Midfielder Ugrinic gave the La Liga side the lead and the match looked to be heading Valencia’s way before Newcastle rallied to score twice and claim what was only their second win of an otherwise difficult pre-season programme.
