FIFA has hit out at what it describes as a “concerted and ongoing effort” to dislodge Gianni Infantino from his role as president of world football’s governing body.
This comes after UEFA doubled down on its threat of European nations boycotting future World Cups following the now scrapped FIFA Forward Enterprise (FFE) plan that would have seen FIFA make stakes in world soccer’s commercial and event operations, including the World Cups and Club World Cups, available for private investment.
It also follows a report in the Daily Telegraph on Friday evening, which claimed that UEFA paid a six-figure sum to an alleged lover of Infantino’s when he was its secretary general. The Telegraph did not name the individual involved.
In a statement released to The Athletic on Saturday, a UEFA spokesperson said it was “aware of the allegations and can confirm a departure payment was made to the individual in question, coupled with the payment of fees for an MBA course at a local business school. Such regulations have been tightened since 2016 and the current staff regulations – which apply to all UEFA employees at whatever level – reflect those found in a modern, high-profile organisation.”
FIFA responded to The Telegraph’s story by saying Infantino “strongly denies these allegations” and that they are “categorically untrue”.
UEFA did not answer when asked by The Athletic who authorised and signed off on the payment.

And on Saturday evening, a FIFA statement read: “It is increasingly evident that there is a concerted and ongoing effort by some to undermine FIFA and its President.
“Those who do not have the support of FIFA’s Member Associations should not seek to achieve through allegation, insinuation or misinformation what they cannot achieve through FIFA’s established democratic processes.”
The statement added that the organisation will “not support, facilitate or tolerate any process concerning the election of the FIFA president that is inconsistent” with its “statutes, democratic procedures and established governance framework”.
“The FIFA president has dedicated more than 30 years of his professional life to European and world football, contributing to significant change in the game and, in particular, to broadening access, resources and opportunity across world football,” the statement adds.
“Change inevitably challenges established interests, but disagreement with that change cannot justify efforts to undermine the democratic mandate of FIFA’s president or the institution he was elected to lead.”
UEFA announced on July 30 that its nations would boycott FIFA competitions and stood by its commitment, despite the U-turn and an apology from Infantino.
It said in a statement on Thursday: “UEFA made it abundantly clear in its statement on Saturday that it has lost confidence in Gianni Infantino’s presidency. That position holds.”
North American confederation Concacaf also expressed criticism of the proposal, calling for “comprehensive reckoning” of Infantino’s presidency.
While there has been public criticism of FIFA and Infantino from the presidents of Norwegian Football Federation and the Jordanian Football Association, the FIFA president has received support from individual member associations, including the Argentine Football Association and the Mexican Football Federation.
In a statement on Thursday, the African Football Confederation (CAF) said that it “unanimously reconfirmed its support” and that it was committed to continuing to work together with FIFA.
CONMEBOL, the confederation for South and Central America spoke of :its concern about the repeated unilateral actions taken without resorting to dialogue or the institutional mechanisms” in a statement, but called for “unity of the football family” before FIFA’s presidential elections, which are set to take place in March.
