When Edward Scissorhands arrived in theaters in 1990, it introduced audiences to one of Johnny Depp’s most memorable characters and began a creative partnership between Depp and director Tim Burton that would span decades.
But Depp wasn’t the only major star considered for the title role.
According to ScreenRant, before Burton ultimately cast Depp, 20th Century Fox pushed the director to meet with Tom Cruise about playing Edward. Cruise was already one of Hollywood’s biggest stars, but the meeting reportedly convinced Burton that he was not the right person to bring his strange, melancholy creation to life.
And looking back at the careers of both actors, it’s easy to see just how different Edward Scissorhands was from the kinds of movies Cruise was making.
Tom Cruise Wasn’t Burton’s First Choice
Burton reportedly had Johnny Depp in mind for Edward from the beginning, but Fox wanted him to consider a bigger-name star.
At the time, Cruise was already a major Hollywood leading man. He broke out with Risky Business in 1983 and followed it with films including Top Gun, The Color of Money, Rain Man and Born on the Fourth of July.
That resume made Cruise an obvious choice from a studio perspective. But Edward was a very different kind of character.
He was an artificial human creation with scissors instead of hands, barely spoke, lived in a fantastical world, and served as the emotional center of a story that was far more interested in loneliness and belonging than traditional Hollywood heroics. Not exactly a Maverick.
Burton wanted the actor playing Edward to understand the character’s vulnerability rather than simply make him another conventional movie star.
According to scriptwriter Caroline Thompson, Cruise’s meeting with Burton became increasingly focused on the practical questions surrounding Edward. Among them was one particularly memorable question: How did Edward go to the bathroom?
Cruise also reportedly wanted to know how Edward ate and drank and how he had managed to survive without those basic necessities. From Cruise’s perspective, those questions may have been perfectly reasonable. But for Burton and Thompson, they missed the point of the character.
The unanswered questions were part of Edward’s fantasy. The movie wasn’t intended to provide a scientific explanation for every aspect of his existence. Thompson later said Cruise was asking questions that “can’t be asked for this character,” arguing that the mystery surrounding Edward was part of the delicacy of the story (and why every lady in the neighborhood wanted him to try her potluck contribution and cut her hair).
That creative disconnect apparently became one of the reasons Burton moved on.
Depp and Burton Started a Long Creative Partnership
The decision to move forward with Johnny Depp as Edward turned out pretty well for everyone involved.
Edward Scissorhands became Depp and Burton’s first feature-film collaboration, and it would eventually lead to a long-running creative partnership. According to Rotten Tomatoesaudience rating of 91% and critics score of 92%, the movie is also one of Depp’s highest-rated projects.
The two went on to work together on Ed Wood, Sleepy Hollow, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, Corpse Bride, Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street, Alice in Wonderland, and Dark Shadows, among others.
Depp’s Edward also became one of the defining characters of his early career.
