On the morning of Aug. 9, 1969, Hollywood woke up to news of a crime that seemed almost impossible to comprehend. Sharon Tate, a 26-year-old actress who was eight and a half months pregnant, was murdered at her Los Angeles home along with four other people.
The killings would become one of the most infamous crimes in American history and eventually lead investigators to Charles Manson and the followers who made up his so-called “Family.” The case captivated the country, became a sensational trial, and permanently changed the way many Americans viewed Hollywood, celebrity and the counterculture of the late 1960s.
Sharon Tate Was at the Height of Her Career
Tate spent much of the 1960s building a career in Hollywood.
Born in Dallas in 1943, she began modeling and acting as a teenager before moving to Los Angeles. She landed television roles before making her film debut and eventually became known for movies including The Fearless Vampire Killers, Don’t Make Waves and Valley of the Dolls.
Her career was gaining momentum when her personal life entered a new chapter.
Tate married director Roman Polanski in January 1968, and later that year she became pregnant with the couple’s first child. In early 1969, they moved into a home at 10050 Cielo Drive in Beverly Hills’ Benedict Canyon.
That house would soon become the site of one of the most notorious crimes of the 20th century.
The Murders Shocked Hollywood
On the night of Aug. 8, Tate went to dinner with friends Jay Sebring, Abigail Folger and Wojciech Frykowski. The group returned to the Cielo Drive home later that night.
Shortly after midnight on Aug. 9, members of Manson’s cult entered the property. Tate, Sebring, Folger and Frykowski were killed, along with Steven Parent, an 18-year-old who happened to be leaving the property.
Tate’s murder was particularly shocking because of her age, rising career and pregnancy. She was just 26 years old and was expecting her first child with Polanski, who was in London at the time.
One of the more important details of the case is that Manson himself did not participate in the murders at the Tate residence.
Instead, his followers carried out the killings. Manson would nevertheless become the central figure in the investigation and prosecution because of his influence over the group and his role in directing the violence.
The following night, Manson’s followers killed Leno and Rosemary LaBianca at their Los Angeles home, expanding the killings into a two-night crime spree that horrified the country.
Manson and several of his followers were eventually convicted in connection with the murders.
Why Did the Manson Family Kill Sharon Tate?
The motive remains more complicated than the explanation that became famous during the trial.
Prosecutors argued that Manson wanted his followers to trigger an apocalyptic race war he called “Helter Skelter,” borrowing the term from the Beatles song.
Manson reportedly developed an elaborate belief that a racial conflict would destroy the United States and leave his followers in a position of power. That theory became the prosecution’s central explanation for the killings, although later commentators and members of the Manson Family questioned whether it fully explained what happened.
Another theory involved Manson’s failed attempts to establish himself as a musician. The Cielo Drive property had previously been occupied by music producer Terry Melcher, who had considered but ultimately declined to give Manson a recording contract.
Other former members of the group later suggested that the murders were intended simply to attract attention and “shock the world.”
The Manson Trial Became a National Spectacle
Manson and his followers were eventually arrested and brought to trial, where the bizarre behavior of Manson and the details surrounding his cult attracted enormous media attention.
Manson was convicted in 1971 and initially sentenced to death. After California overturned its death penalty in 1972, that sentence was converted to life imprisonment.
Manson remained in prison until his death in 2017 at age 83. His followers were also convicted in connection with multiple killings.
