Sometimes, you don’t realize you’re witnessing greatness for the last time. That’s what happened for the more than 120,000 who attended Queen’s concert at Knebworth Park 40 years ago, Aug. 9, 1986.
The final show of the band’s Magic Tour throughout Europe, it also wound up being their last show as an original unit, including electrifying lead singer Freddie Mercury.
The buildup
Coming off their spectacular performance at Live Aid the previous summer, Queen kicked off its Magic Tour on June 7, 1986 at Rasunda Stadium in Stockholm, Sweden.
After Sweden, Queen weaved through Belgium, France, Netherlands, West Germany, Switzerland and Ireland before selling out a pair of shows at London’s Wembley Stadium in mid-July. The success of these two concerts led to the band scheduling a final outdoor show at Knebworth Park, which would take place after more gigs in West Germany, Austria, Hungary, France and Spain.
The finale
Mercury, guitarist Brian May, drummer Roger Taylor and bassist John Deacon thrilled the massive crowd at Knebworth, performing a variety of newer songs as well as some of their classic hits.
Shortly after the tour came to a close, Mercury said he did not want to perform any more large shows. He would eventually be diagnosed with AIDS and passed away in 1991.
Queen did not reunite for another full tour until 2005, and by that time, Deacon had given up his music career. The Knebworth show was the last time the whole gang was together.
Incredibly, no one filmed it
Henry Lytton Cobbold, the current occupant of Knebworth House, attended the concert. In 2016, he recalled all the technology utilized during the event, but lamented that there was no official recording.
“There were big screens all around the arena, including one massive one on top of the stage, and they filmed the whole thing but didn’t press record,” Lytton Cobbald said. “So although they had the sound desk mix from that show, the only visual images are tiny little bits of news clips.”
“Can you believe that on Freddie Mercury’s last concert, the great showman, no one actually pressed record?” he continued. “There’s a Dutch bootleg of somebody filming a screen at the back of the audience for the whole show, so there’s a record of it, but no proper film.
“So the concert becomes a bit mythological because of that.”
