On Aug. 9, 1985, a young Tim Burton released his first feature film.
It wasn’t Beetlejuice. It wasn’t Batman. And it certainly wasn’t the gothic fantasy that would eventually become synonymous with his name. It was Pee-wee’s Big Adventure.
Starring Paul Reubens as the eccentric, childlike Pee-wee Herman, the movie follows its hero on a bizarre cross-country journey after his beloved bicycle is stolen. More than four decades later, the movie has become a cult favorite and is widely regarded as one of the great comedies of the 1980s.
And it was the unlikely beginning of one of Hollywood’s most recognizable directing careers.
Tim Burton Was Only 26 When He Made ‘Pee-wee’s Big Adventure’
Burton was just 26 when he got the opportunity to make Pee-wee’s Big Adventure.
At the time, he was nowhere near the household name he would eventually become. His résumé consisted largely of work at Disney and several short films, including Vincent and Frankenweenie.
On paper, Pee-wee’s Big Adventure also seemed like an odd fit for the filmmaker.
Burton would eventually become famous for his gothic visual style, eccentric characters and fantastical worlds. Pee-wee, meanwhile, was a bright, absurd comedy built around a character who already had a devoted following. But Burton found ways to put his own stamp on it.
The Movie Was a Bigger Hit Than Burton Remembered
Burton has recalled having a somewhat complicated relationship with his first feature.
Looking back on the movie, he remembered receiving some brutal reviews. One critic reportedly gave the film a minus-one rating on a scale of one to 10, while another praised virtually everything about the production except Burton’s direction. But the numbers told a different story.
According to Far Out Magazine, Pee-wee’s Big Adventure was made for approximately $7 million and earned more than $40 million, making it a significant financial success. And its reputation only grew over time.
Critics Eventually Came Around
The movie wasn’t universally loved when it debuted.
Gene Siskel was among the prominent critics who disliked it according to Far Out Magazine, but plenty of others praised its lighthearted humor and Burton’s ability to translate Reubens’ Pee-wee persona from television and stage to the big screen.
On Rotten Tomatoes, the movie is certified fresh with a 78% critics score and a 79% audience rating.
The biggest impact of Pee-wee’s Big Adventure wasn’t its box-office haul. It gave Burton the opportunity to prove he could handle a feature film.
Three years later, he followed it with Beetlejuice, a movie that more clearly reflected the visual style that would define his career. Then came Batman in 1989, turning Burton into one of Hollywood’s most sought-after directors.
From there, his filmography grew to include Edward Scissorhands, The Nightmare Before Christmas, Ed Wood, Sleepy Hollow, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory and numerous other films.
But none of that happens without Pee-wee. The story of a rebel and his bike.
